Ready for a fresh start
Nov 07, 2007 | 5:51PM | report this

(The following is a weekly exclusive Q&A with Bears All-Pro linebacker Brian Urlacher conducted by FOXSports.com’s Senior NFL Writer/NFL Insider Jay Glazer. Urlacher has elected to conduct a weekly sit down with Glazer to open up about the latest news from the Bears, his team and his own play in what has so far been a disappointing season for the Bears.)

Prior to the bye week, you revealed just how much back pain has plagued you this season. Did the break help at all or will it limit you for the rest of the season?

It goes in spurts. I don’t think the off time helped as much as some new exercises I’ve been doing has. For some reason, the last three weeks it has felt… not good but better than it has this whole season. It’s encouraging. I‘m trying to do different things like take different vitamins and do these exercises for it. It’s going to be an ongoing thing so I’m trying to learn how to deal with it.

You said it “goes in spurts.” Give me an example of when it’s worse.

Once I get stretched out and loosen it up on Sundays, it feels pretty good. The worst it really feels is when our offense has a long drive. After I loosen it up and then I sit and I’m not running around on it during a long drive, it tightens up a bit.

This season has been disappointing to say the least. Your offense has never exactly been considered a juggernaut but your defense has. The D has been far from dominant or even the least bit consistent. Did you use this off week to figure out what the heck happened to this vaunted Bears defense?

I’ve been trying to figure out what’s wrong with me and the team every single day I’m at work and then when I leave work. This week I didn’t think about football at all. Sometimes getting away and stepping back helps you see things better. I’m still trying to find the answer to why I’m not playing like I want and why we aren’t playing well as a team.

I didn’t want to think about football at all. I needed to recharge my batteries. This week was a mental break for me. The bye week came at a perfect time for us. I hung out with my kids and did absolutely nothing. It was great. I came back so refreshed. I think a lot of our guys did.

Well, since you didn’t think about football in the bye week, I’ll give you a little news update. That guy Adrian Peterson, I think you’ve heard of him, absolutely gashed the Chargers defense for 296 yards. I think you know the kid.

It’s funny, I was flying back with Adam (Archuleta) and I was telling him I hope he put up 350 yards on somebody. We gave up 220 to him. You see, he does it to everybody, not just us.

Can this kid be stopped?

Anyone in the NFL can be stopped. There’ll be games he doesn’t get a bunch of carries because of the situation of the game. If you go by stats, obviously he has to be considered the best in the league right now. He’s a big guy and he’s hard to tackle.  As big and as fast as he is, he’s tough to bring down.

You hit the bye and the one thing that still hasn’t worked itself out is your quarterback position. Rex Grossman got benched because of all the turnovers, but Brian Griese has been just as inconsistent. Is it time to turn to Kyle Orton if Griese doesn’t turn things around quickly?

We, as players, don’t decide who’s in the game. Griese is the guy right now and we’re behind him. Up until Detroit (in Week 8), he had a rough game in that one, he was playing well. You can’t yank a guy based on one game. He’s not dumb, he’s a veteran QB and he knows what he needs to do to turn it around for us.

What about Cedric Benson? What if he doesn’t show more consistency as you start the second half of the season? Should you go another direction there?

He had some fumble problems earlier in the season, but he’s gotten much better with that. As a defense, we’ve put our offense in a bad position. We haven’t helped our running game because our defense can’t stop anybody. We’ve got to put him in better positions to run with a lead. How can he get anything going if we keep letting people score and putting us in positions where we’re down early?

What do you need to change in how you play the second half of the season?

Make more big plays. Be more of an impact player. My whole career, I’ve made big plays. I played some games this year and you probably wondered if I even played. I need to quit missing tackles.

You’ve said you still think the Bears are a playoff team. Do you realize what your team needs to do in order to make that happen? Green Bay and Detroit are going to be pretty difficult to catch.

It’s not an eight-game season. We’re going to have to go 7-1 or 8-0 to get into the playoffs. We can do that. Once you get in you never know what happens. If you’re hot, anything can happen in the postseason.

We have to look at every game like it’s a one-game season. But guys are refreshed, rejuvenated. We’re hungry. I really, honestly believe we can still make the playoffs.

I'm a Packer fan and I give Urlacher credit for talking to the press when things aren't going so well.

Too bad my most vivid memory of this guy is when he brought Paris Hilton to a Monday Night game against the Pack a few years ago.

I respect Urlacher, but I still don't think that the Bears can get back into the playoff hunt, not with the Packers in their division.

I'm glad to see Urlacher still believes in this team after an uninspiring first half. It's hard to see it happening, but if the whole team can get focused, who knows?

very quick to comment about the bears (jar2524). not too long ago the cowboys were the joke of the nfl. Just remember every team goes from great to worse and back (just a matter of time). could be another 20 years but I love and respect the team. I stopped being a one team fan and now just love any game that has good players

If you're going talk about Chicago, Green Bay and Detroit as potential playoff teams, you might as well throw the Vikes in the mix...we could win the next eight in a row too! Maybe Urlacher should cut back on the pain meds. Has he watched the Bears play?

Ouch!

I don't blame ESPN!

The Bears have not played to their potential, injuries aside. Cedric Benson is no Thomas Jones. He's shown no guts, desire, or determination. That was a STUPID move on Angelo's part. Our 'D' line has to step it up. We got Tommie Harris back, and Tank Johnson was more of a distraction in the end.
I applaud Brian for taking responsibility in saying he needs to do a better job of getting off blocks. Briggs and Hillenmeyer need to do the same.

AND GET A REAL QUARTERBACK!!

why is it that every where there is a bears forum, there is always a Meathead Cowgirls fan, at least the Packers fans have class, and we are rivals. I don't believe for one second that the bears will make it into the playoffs this year, nor am i upset about it, it dosen't matter who makes it from the NFC (including the Cowgirls) the AFC WILL win the superbowl again this year, so actually i do hope the weak little cowgirls make it and get crushed!!!! GO BEARS

Oh, and good luck to the Cowboys keeping Tank out of trouble. Soon enough you'll have your own distractions, and suspensions to deal with. Urlacher will be successful at whatever he chooses to pursue because he is respectful, intelligent, well spoken, and HUMBLE.

What a dissapointment, a team that was in the SB last year and is now with a 3-5 record!
Sounds like the whole team is in need of a remodeling eh?

Urlacher is The God of Middle Linebackers as far as Im concerned. There are ten other players that don't have the same passion as he does, and he stays out of trouble.

At this point I would toss around the switching Griese with Orton and any combo of players that might accompany the two. Not much of anything to loose but much to gain. Lovie has to be beside himself and once again, why not shake things up a bit and see if there isn't something that triggers a positive change!

Let me say this, I hate the Packers, but at least their fans have class, and respect for the game. But the Pack need to enjoy #4 while they can because when he retires, if ever, they will have many questions at QB. Lets reflect what happened when MJ left the Bulls, hmmmm, they haven't done a thing since, so enjoy the last years o####reat run Green Bay becasue when it is over, Aaron Rodgers will take over, and I can't wait. I hope the cowgirls make it to the SB so they can be dismantled by Tom Brady and company. It's so nice to see Randy Moss tearing it up in an other division/conference. Dallas is going to enjoy all of the press when Tank gets caught with an other military sized gun collection in his house. The cowgirls have always been a bunch of criminals and always will be, it's only a matter of time before TO causes more drama. I hope the Bears let someone besides Jerry Angelo pick our QB in the first round of the draft, and any offensive players after, but the man can draft defense. I just hope we don't have to wait over 20 years for the next SB run. We are not going to make the playoffs this year, and if the Bears do make it, they will not go far. I can't wait till our next QB draft pick is a bust in 2011, and what's up with Benson, we made the mistake of handing him the starting job, lets make Hester put on like 20 pounds and hand the ball off to him. I can't wait for the cowgirls fan to say he sucks, lapdogs suck, and so do girls with dragon tattoos.

It does suck to be a Chicago sports fan, all teams are playing way below expectations, exepct for the fire, and I hate soccer. I live right down the street from the fire stadium and I am actually suprised at how many people show up to those games.

I dont feel sorry for chicago, they had high expectations, sustained some injurious this year and their qb's not doin so hot. They were in the superbowl last year.Plus they beat my packers at home.they are only a player or 2 from being on top again.Urlacher is a great football player and playes the game the way it should be played!! What is funny is listening to some of the viking fans spout off about their hall of famer, newly annoited best ever running back AP.The guy has played 8 games,I know wikes need somethin to cheer about but easy on all the accolades, hes had a couple of good games with a great O-line.GO PACK!!

I'm a Bears fan whether we are 16-0 or 0-16. Brian do what you have to get well we are behind you 100%...!

oumike word is your team is going to be challenging Hester and actually kicking the ball to him, I dont know if you know this but he's pretty much a BIG DEAL so I hope your ready for him.

Urlacher, Im glad you took this time off for you! You deserve it being a leader on a team that has been struggling is hard because people look to you for answers. You are an exceptional leader and player and Im sure you will figure out what has been nawing at your defense. Im opptimistic for playoffs, because I am a Rockies fan (no not a banwagon fan) and they pretty much did the impossible just to get to the playoffs and then to the WS so I have faith!

I would like to see the Bears turn Urlacher loose. Forget dropping him into coverage. Then and only then we will see how good he really is.

Send him after the QB! Let him play a true middle linebacker position instead of coverage.

I do not think he is all that. This will prove to the world who he really is. As of right now, THE most over rated line backer and player in the NFL.

BTW, he will never be a #### Butkus.

Orton definitely needs a shot at QB before the season ends.. just incase he can actually play.. that way we can blow a draft pick on a new RB since benson looks like he is going to commit suicide any minute on the field. Pick your F*ing head up and play with some passion you ####, you have the opportunity of a life-time to play proffesional football for one of the most storied franchises in the league, get some passion!
