A TOPICAL, OR SPORTS CREAM CAUSE IN DEATH OF 17 YEAR OLD TRACK STAR

Arielle Newman, a cross country track athlete at Notre Dame Acadamy of Staten Island, died April 13, 2007 from over use of a sports cream to soothe her aching legs and joints. Apparently her body absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate, an anti-inflammatory found in creams as Ben-#### and Icy Hot, the medical examiner said.
Arielle Newman, who had won a number of awards in her sport, had been to a party the previous night and upon returning home talked with her mother for a few hours.
All appeared normal until Arielle was found non responsive later.
A doctor at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Ronald Grelsamer, stated she either lathered herself with the oinment, used way too much or used the proper amount and for reasons unknown her body absorbed an abnormal amount of the chemical.
Deaths from the chemical are rare and this case is unusual. Absorption can be intensified if exercising in extreme heat.
Arielle's mother Alice Newman remains stunned that her daughter is dead from using an over the counter cream product. Ms. Newman stated " I am scrupulous about my children's health. I did not think an over the counter product could be unsafe."
A warning to some of us "old timer's" who sport around a bit more than we should thinking we can ease it all by use of this joint and muscle salve.
Hey Mean...Shocked the bleep outta me that's why I posted it. (imagine bleeping the second word of Ben- G.. ointment) My daughter or son? SOMEONE...SOMEWHERE...would be answering and it would be at the point of a sword! Thanks coming & taking time MeanDovine.
MeanD...TG for Mum's, Mom's whatever ya wanna call 'em, huh? ;0)
ian2813...Thanks much for checking out the item and taking time to comment ian2813. To tell ya the truth I believe this is the end of the "Cream" story, itself. They appear to know all they need as to the product. But, you are right, I'm sure an intensive investigation (which they already had this one) into the exact reason WHY this happened to young Arielle is taking place now. Then, again, maybe not. They answered the question. This may be the last we hear. Wanna do an investigative piece and "pop" in on them asking some uncomfortable questions? I have yet to see this on the broadcast media...MeanD ?
One of the online papers near you wrote that the young lady was at a kegger the evening before and was chased and assaulted...that alone makes me go, Hmmm.
6/10 CBS Evening News is re-hashing this episode.
Methyl salicylate combined with aspirin is being blamed here...hellooooo lawsuit and ambulance chasers.
shocking! And Ben-#### has the same ingredients? I use that all the time after I golf for my shoulder. Dang...thanks for the warning and this is so sad for the family. Bill, by doing this blog you may save a life......this is what blogging is about. Thanks!
slshusker...Thanks for the word and visit. Yeah, I mentioned she was at a "party" , "kegger" et al but I hadn't heard of her being assaulted. Now, slshusker, you're makin me have to go back into this thing to find out "grabbed, hit" or "thrown down and raped". But "assaulted" SOUNDS like maybe "attempt" at rape. The aspirin wasn't mentioned either but hey...she's a multi award winner in her sport/sports. Along with the ointment I'm sure aspirin was taken on occasion. I think that maybe media "add some more juice" to the culprit and scare as many folks as they can. I'm sure the doctor's have it down that the metha salicylite absorption into Arielle's body was the cause. Though RARE and extremely infrequent, this is what caused the young girls death. BUT..whatever "running" or physical exertion from the assault was demanded may be a factor. ie: heat, pores opening wider thereby increasing the body's absorption of the chemical. (I realy miss "phil voice but can hear it slightly, still)
lisa4usc...Thanks lisa4usc for your time. Don't let it #### ya too much girl. This is MY OPINION...ok..lawsuit creator's and such?...When I was reading and thinking this over, especially when I first read the story, I imagined Arielle using the ointment as a sort of "pain reliever" DURING her races and sports activities, also after. My opinion, it just hit me whle reading, that Arielle would rub this product on her joints and muscles then proceed to her challenge. It was an "idea" that sprang to my mind thinking "maybe that would give me an edge. Running, but feeling much less muscle and joint pain, thereby my "secret" for excellence. NOT taking ONE thing away from Arielle's accomplishment's, BE SURE OF THAT, it was just something that came to my feeble mind. So don't go tossing your Ben-Guy (hehe...bleeping..what's that about?) it does the job. For you and many others. And as to saving live's? Aww lisa4usc...shucks...'taint nuthin no one else wouldn't do. 'Taint savin' lives so musch as informing. A public service announcement.
nyace29...Hey..Thanks so much for your time man...No need to fret, I'm sure. Hey 30?...You're a kid! Go "walk it off" dude! ;0)
Wow, the last couple years, I was using Icy Hot like Chef Boy-R-Dee uses spaghetti sauce!
I think she must have had some sort of allergic reaction or some 1 in a million "defect" in her body. I'll be interested to hear what the "official" cause of death turns out to be.
MustardMan..That is the "official" cause of death. What they don't know is how. As the doctor stated, lathered on, too much, or her body just absorbed too much of the chemical? And , yeah, it appears to be a one in a million thing. Now that word is out, though, you would have thought SOME notice that this ingrediant was deadly would be on the street.
Magic53...Thanks for your time. For me it would be more than sad...devastating would be a word. Yeah I was suprised to see the #### in Ben-#### bleeped. LMAO...I wouldn't worry much if you use it. You probably rub into a shoulder or knee, etc...I (my opinion) habe a sense she was covering her legs from thigh to ankle with it and maybe arms too...Yeah..Ya look at her and it is sad.
Like a dog with a bone - or an over/under or even a staff of good, hard wood
