BOSTON COLLEGE: 2008 OFFICIAL SEASON PREDICTION
Aug 03, 2008 | 10:19AM | report this

2008 OFFICIAL SEASON PREDICTION THREAD

This is my 3rd Season. Here is my Analysis and Prediction and I always give the season a theme.

This year it’s: “TURN THE DEFENSE LOOSE!”

Objectively, since I never mix my heart with my head, BC is not in that bad a shape and once again, there is no team BC can’t beat. None!

TEAM STRENGTHS:

 1--Wide Receivers/TE:

Wow! A few years back you could not say this and these guys are bigger, stronger and faster and might give Crane that early confidence and settle in boost with some big plays. This year, can’t have any drops.

Could this be the surprise of the college football world? We have a nice corps of pass catchers and with Logan ’s offense…..Could this be the “Crane Aerial Circus on Commonwealth”?

I hope so!

2--Offensive Line:

I did not think Gosder Cherilus played very well last year no matter where he was drafted. BC has enough coming back and year 2 in the system, BC’s line will be solid.

3—Defensive Line/LB’s:

I combined all the guys. I will go out on a limb but I think BC has one of the best defensive front 7’s in America . BC has size, speed, talent and quality depth like very few powerhouses have in America .

I think from all my years of watching football, the Giants in the 90’s and last year, and the Ravens in 2002, they just shut down teams and let fair to developing offenses come together or just eke out wins with more chances, better field position, turnovers and wearing out the other teams defenses by giving them the ball with loads of 3 and out stops and again more opportunities.

With that said, it’s a double edged sword and you can read the other thread and know that unless Spaz changes his outdated core philosophy, schemes and approach and turns the defense loose with an assortment of multiple blitz packages and moves up our corners to be more aggressive, then the 8 teams rated ahead of BC will be very difficult to beat.

The NCAA Game has changed to a pass happy multiple set offensive circus. It’s time to take the leash off the “Maroon Monster Mash” and make this season something special.

The major key to this season is Frank Spaziani. Spaz can set the tone, get the crowd fired up, give our defense nation wide respect, give birth to 100 nickname contests and maybe trigger a run for the BCS Title.

Same post comments made for years. BC still has no titles. I can’t be that wrong?

How many times has your parents, boss and people told you in life –“Go with your strengths and let the rest happen?”

BC’s enormous synergistic strength is its front 7. Click. That was the leash clasp being released by 74.

TEAM CONCERNS:

1-- Crane.

A 5th Year Senior, so someone has to let Chris know that he has go no where to go and nothing to lose, so use the Logan passing offense and our core of solid receivers and TE and remember one thing…..

…this is it kid…there is no tomorrow…this is your team…..this is your time…this is your year…this is why you took all those 2nd and 3rd team snaps for 4 years…to prepare you to bring BC to Miami, just like when Tennessee won the Title the year after Peyton left!

Hopefully some phone calls and support from Logan, Flutie and Ryan will help guide Crane game by game.

BC’s defense could key a super season by giving the BC offense and Crane better field position and more chances.

2-- Running Backs.

BC has 4 incoming freshman and one sophomore. Is heralded frosh Haden a Tony Dorsett or just a good freshman who needs time? Will sophomore Mulrooney, or the other 3 freshman Reynolds, Kelly or Harris step up since a couple will probably be red-shirted? I say give Haden the ball and maybe pop McCluskey on a 3rd and long like Nebraska did for many TD’s and first downs.

3-- Defensive Backs.

Always a mystery.

BC took in 8 freshman DB’s. The games most natural aggressors and in your face best athletes and BC’s go getters are stifled and give up too much cushion in the Spaz defensive schemes. BC combination of poor pass rushing exacerbated by very few blitzing calls to make up for the lack of pressure and failure to use multiple nickel and dime packages make the key to the BC season again, a true mysterious unknown.

Again, same post I have made for years. Enjoy!

4-- Special Teams.

Big school coaches seem to flock to VT’s Summer School for Special teams. BC Special Team coaches and defensive coaches never seem to go. Ergo, you get the annual BC special teams low rankings and prior year fiascos. Great special teams can make the difference in great seasons and championship seasons.

How did BC do in the kicking game versus VT in the Championship Game? Lost 3 points on a poor snap, and then VT gets a deuce return, along with an early missed a chip shot.    -6!

Instead of BC 20-14, its 16-16, and late instead of  21-20 VT and all BC needed was a FG to go squeeze Oranges, but BC got squeezed by the talented, smarter and superior coached VT defense --- early when BC’s offense was smoking hot  --- and then late for the Pick 6.

That is my hope for BC’s defense this year, but VT has Beamer and his stellar special teams and defensive coaching crew. By the way, Beamer coaches the Special teams himself. Surprised?

Last year VT’s Special Teams was ranked…..guess… yup, number 1 in America . Yup 1!

Anyone get the message I have trying to convey over the years on why BC has never been to a BCS Bowl Game?

Thank God, long snapper Jack Geiser is back firing bullets and healthy, but Aponavicius is inconsistent after 30 yards and limited in range, maybe 44 and in. This FG kicker is not a concern but a real glaring weakness.

Punt returns and kick returns we should be OK and Robinson is back and we have some freshman speedsters.

THE SCHEDULE AND SEASON PREDICTION:

I assume Frank Spaziani reads this on this site or not, or someone printed him last year’s brilliance and prints this year’s and slides it under his door, or he reads it on this FOX site.

Why don't we make the other teams adjust to our defensive schemes and pressure for just once some year?

Because the game has passed Frank Spaziani by for the last 4 years, or more.

He is a great BC GUY, but he is not the man for the job anymore. In today's world change is the norm with technology and your job. If you are change aversive or a fossil, you lose.

Frank has had ample time to watch countless games where heavy defensive pressure brought by blitzes and attack schemes win games. BC takes itself out of big games with its cushy defense and laying back waiting for a mistake or interception.

As we have the history, that will work on mediocre or even some really good teams, but eventually it will be easily solved and since it hasn't changed in 10 years, it has been solved as we can see from the prior year’s losses analysis.

BC won a lot of games on offensive late game magic and the stellar play of some defensive individuals in a bad scheme.

Frank Spaziani is incapable of radical change and has trouble with in game changes no matter the headset and has a reactive mind. He never forces the teams freshman QB’s or QB to make big plays early and let’s them get settled in and burn BC.

This now pass happy NCAA game is all about heavy rush pressure on the QB. Sacks, hurries knockdowns and forcing the mistake, tempo and the play.

Frank Spaziani does great and will do great versus fair to good competition and maybe even some big games like his tenure with TOB. He is luckier now with the dynamic offense of Jags and Logan scoring more points and capable of comebacks.

I see big trouble after the first 4 games if BC’s defense isn’t changed from the first play to a more radical attack defense, even if the situation versus lesser opponents does not warrant the deal, you still need live game practice and the score starts at 0-0 so start sending in LB’s and an occasional CB blitz and the get to the QB and on the way stop the runner.

As in previous years, this will never come to pass at BC; hence BC will be passed upon and beaten like FSU, Maryland last year and other games in prior years.

I lost faith a long time ago and I my only hope is the offense is so spectacular and will score when Spaz’s defense goes into the turtle or just déjà vus us all over again. What a shame!

This defense could be the best in America with our talent and brains. All ya gotta do is turn them loose.

Here we go:

BC: 6 Offensive and 4 Defensive returning starters and no QB.

The number is my personal ranking of degree of difficulty considering each teams returning starters, QB’s and returning letterman depth.

August 30 at Kent State -- 11

September 6 Georgia Tech  -- 10

September 20 UCF -- 8

September 27 Rhode Island  -- 12

October 4 at North Carolina State   -- 9

October 18 Virginia Tech -- 2

October 25 at North Carolina -- 3

November 1 Clemson  --1

November 8 Notre Dame -- 5

November 15 at Florida State  -- 4

November 22 at Wake Forest   -- 6

November 29 Maryland  --7

****************

1-- BC at Kent State   --DNP --- Next Game:

Returning Starters:  8 Offense and 8 Defense and QB.

Kent State is a little better than most think since last year they lost their QB early, but they do have a nice runner and lots returning. BC overlooks this scheduled cupcake and they will light this board up like a Christmas Tree.

BC has too much on defense for this one dimensional offensive team and small defensive line.

BC 37 Kent State 13   ---  1-0 ACC: 0-0

2-- Georgia Tech at BC  Previous Game: Jack'ville State -- Next Game: at VT.

Returning Starters:  5 Offense and 4 Defense and a new QB.

New Coach and new QB and tough graduation losses, but Paul Johnson played BC tough with Navy. I expect this game to be dominated by a yet to jell BC team. We have a way better engineering school and much better passing attack and defense. Sliderule this!

BC 33 Georgia Tech 13   ---  2-0 ACC: 1-0

3-- UCF at BC  Previous Game: USF --  Next Game: at UTEP

Returning Starters: 5 Offense and 9 Defense and a new QB.

This team knows how to win with George O’Leary and its offense can score versus porous C-USA teams, and came very close versus Texas and beat NC State away. This game should be a barnburner but BC’s defense lives up to the pre-season predictions and crushes the Knights.

BC 30 UCF 10   ---  3-0 ACC: 1-0

4— Rhode Island at BC  Previous Game: At Hofstra --  Next Game: Brown

Returning Starters: 9.

This is a very bad Division 1-AA team.

BC 55 Rams 6   ---  4-0 ACC: 1-0

5—BC at NC State  Previous Game: USF --  Next Game: at FSU

Returning Starters: 6 Offense and 4 Defense and QB.

Gee, if Chuck left the cupboard bare, why all the NCSU graduation losses. This miserable bad mouthing ungrateful brat continued his banter and slights against BC well after he left and into the first ACC Season, like TOB was responsible for BC’s success. I will hate this guy until the day he dies for what he said about my alma mater after he left. This will be year 12 for O’Brien and yup, TOBlunders0-12. Enjoy!

This year game should be full of venom, trick plays and hard hits. BC has too much on defense and Crane may have settled in by now and BC has better receivers and players and of course…..Amato left the cupboard bare= joke.

BC 26 Wolfpack 19   ---  5-0 ACC: 2-0

6—VT at BC State  Previous Game: Western Kentucky --  Next Game: at FSU

Returning Starters: 6 Offense and 4 Defense and QB.

BC and VT are very similar. I think BC and Jags had VT’s defense on it heels in the title game, and I never saw the play sequencing and offense look smoother, until BC stalled in the red zone. Maybe Crane by this time is the surprise efficiency leader in America and BC has an error free, turnover free offense and the Maroon Monster Mash is in full title run mode. Getting pressure and blitzing Glennon on every play will be the key to victory.

BC 26 Hokies 16   ---  6-0 ACC: 3-0

7—BC at North Carolina   Previous Game: at Virginia --  Next Game: at GT

Returning Starters: 10 Offense and 8 Defense and QB.

Last year my tipping point for greatness game was Notre Dame in Game 6. Unless NCSU's great recruit QB Mike Glennon gets the helm and is a superfrosh, I think BC will beat VT, and be 6-0.

This year the tipping point for greatness is UNC. UNC will be home and after 1+ years and spring practice Butch Davis is a solid Coach. This is a solid, dangerous and now loaded for bear team, with a new DC and some really speedy, talented players.

Most of BC's losses in the last 4 years have a common theme, BC got no pressure on young QB's and they buried Spaz’s outdated schemes. Do this in Chapel Hill and UNC may use this as a springboard game after already playing VT and Miami .

I see bad things. I see Spaz reverting back to old habits and the UNC QB standing tall and riddling the BC secondary with speedy receivers and underneath routes.

You may all laugh, but UNC will be just as tough to beat as Clemson the next week. BC has a let down after beating VT and NC State back to back. I see this team as a huge surprise team besides BC this year and maybe we get a rematch in ACC Title game?

Tarheels 40 BC 37 in 3rd OT   ---  6-1 ACC: 3-1

8—Clemson at BC Previous Game: at GT -- Next Game: at FSU

Returning Starters: 9 Offense and 8 Defense and QB.

Can BC run its streak to 4 versus the Top 10 rated Tigers? JoLonn Dunbar with the dive to block an extra point after Nick Larkin made the two greatest back to back defensive plays in BC history. BC letting another Hail Mary pass get behind Spaz’s missing link nickel and dime packages and Kelly had butter fingers last year and only a corner blitz saved BC.

I see BC playing very tough at home after a UNC butt whupping. I see a close game and then BC pulling away late with a solid QB execution in the clutch and a brutal defensive running stop game. The Clemson luck runs out and Poondamonium breaks out in South Carolina as the Tigers get Eagle clawed since we came into the ACC.

Tigers 22 BC 27   --- 7-1  ACC: 4-1

9—Notre Dame at BC Previous Game: Pittsburgh -- Next Game: at Navy

Returning Starters: 9 Offense and 7 Defense and QB.

Notre Dame has this game circled and their anger and alums anger has the Golden Dome ready to explode with a Titanium Sombrero 6th straight loss at BC.

BC defense plays much better, but the Crane offense is sputtering with a suspect running game but a late bad call gives BC life and a late BC rally nips the Irish and the BC Board invasion has begun.

6 Straight! The Titanium Sombrero!

Irish 27 BC 28   --- 8-1 ACC: 4-1

10—BC at FSU Previous Game: Clemson -- Next Game: at Maryland

Returning Starters: 7 Offense and 8 Defense and QB.

Drew Weatherford has killed BC with bulletproof protection and short quick underneath routes to speed merchants in 2005 and 2007 at BC.

We won in Doak in 2006 and Crane turns the table and BC smothers Weatherford.

BC 27 FSU 25   --- 9-1 ACC: 5-1

BC is now a TOP 7 team and nearing the 2 hole for the BCS National Title bid to South Beach .

11—BC at Wake Forest Previous Game: at NCSU -- Next Game: at Vanderbilt

Returning Starters: 5 Offense and 9 Defense and QB.

Riley Skinner is a polished QB. The big difference is WF has a killer kicker in a close games

As the last ACC Tilt for Wake Forest, and if Clemson stumbles, this could be for the ACC Title shot and a trip to Tampa . Grobe is a tough home Coach. Grobe is the best Coach in the ACC, maybe America!  Swank makes 4, Apo misses 3 as one is blocked, but Crane fires 3 TD darts!

BC 37 Wake Forest 26   --- 9-1   ACC: 6-1

ATLANTIC DIVISION CHAMPIONS.

12— Maryland at BC Previous Game: at FSU -- Finale.

Returning Starters: 8 Offense and 5 Defense and QB.

Senior Day. BC’s defense sets a record for sacks and the defense smothers the Terps and BC’s Crane throws for 400 yards versus Maryland for the second straight year. Where was this defensive blitz mania all year as fans pull their hair out. I have no worries there.

BC 37 Maryland 14 --- 11-1 ACC: 7-1 *******************************************

DECEMBER 6: ACC Championship Game

On to Tampa Bay and I see BC in a rematch with UNC and BC winning 38-10 and getting the BCS # 2 spot and a shot at the National Title.

12-1 ACC 8-1 ACC CHAMPIONS.

*******************************************p>

Tennessee had a QB like Chris Crane after the Peyton Manning era and won the title. History repeats itself . BC, a 9 point underdog to the USC Trojans who play a brutal schedule and go 11-1, and end up ranked 1st, get upset in Miami by the Eagles, by stopping a 2 point conversion with no time left.

 BC 31 USC 29

13-1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

Stephen Salerno's NCAA Division I College Football Playoff Proposal -TOP 16 TEAMS.
Jun 07, 2008 | 7:07AM | report this

The Great American National Debate on the Division I College Football Playoff is simmering to a boil again and the hypocrisy of the University Presidents combined with the greed of the Bowl Barons is now at an all time high, and the lower divisions just keep on trucking along with all of the other Division I sports with their Championship playoffs.

So, taking into account all the debate arguments, way too many and too trite to list, here is a clear, workable and solid solution implementation:

NCAA Division I College Football Playoff Proposal - TOP 16 TEAMS:

Using a  new comprehensive NCAA model type that should use some of modeling paradigms from the present the Bowl Championship Series contributors, but should be augmented and upgraded with heavy emphasis on Strength of Schedule, Conference Strength, Quality Wins, and the other key critical modeling factors that some of the present BCS models do not now use or emphasize.

Here is the proposal to get to the TOP 16:

Automatic Entries – Conference Championship Winners (3):

Examples:

  1. ACC Champion:  BC vs. Miami

  2. SEC Champion:   Florida vs. LSU

  3. Big 12 Champion:  Texas vs. Nebraska

Automatic Entries – Inter-Conference Championship Winners (4):

The Conference Champions of the Big 10, Pac 10 and Big East are (3) automatic qualifiers for the (4) Inter-Conference Championship Games using their own conference rules.

The next 5 at large teams from the other non-BCS conferences and other teams from the 3 BCS conferences/independents are determined by the NCAA Computer rankings for these 4 Inter-Conference Championship games.

The current 3 BCS conferences/independents that have no Championship Game have received a huge advantage by not playing a possible knock-out Conference Championship Game. This is now eliminated.

All the other teams in the other non-BCS conferences that have a conference title game, will have a choice to move up their conference title game one week, since it would be very difficult for that present non-BCS team, unless it was undefeated and had some huge out of conference wins, to make the 4 Inter-Conference Championships games or eventually becoming one of the final NCAA computer 9 at-large ranked teams, after the 7 Conference/Inter Championship winners get automatic bids, due to their non-BCS conferences strength of schedule.

These 4 new Inter-Conference games will be played on the same day as the 3 other Conference championships with the NCAA’s computer rankings of the (4) highest seeds of the 8 teams in these games getting the home field or geographical advantage.

If in a winter weather region, site must be a dome, or a suitable weather friendly neutral site.

Examples:

  1. Notre Dame vs. Cal. -- Stanford Stadium, California
  2. Michigan vs West Virginia – Ford Field, Detroit
  3. USC vs Ohio State – LA Coliseum, California
  4. Oregon vs. Wisconsin  -- St. Louis, Missouri

YOU NOW HAVE 7 AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERS with the 7 winners.

(Bolded in the Top 16 Final Rankings below).

The new NCAA model for the final 16 playoff seeding process-- including the other 9 at-large teams -- will then re-seed all 16, no matter who is an automatic qualifier.

Example if a team in the SEC loses to 4 TOP 10 or higher teams and then goes 8-4 versus a powerful Top 35 combined SEC schedule with solid out of conference games, that team should be very high in the new playoff computer rankings as possibly one of the new 9 at-large slots, since it probably will not win the automatic bid Conference Championship.

Below is the final example of the TOP 16 re-seeded from the final NCAA Computer, and making adjustments taking into account teams that have previously played in the 7 Championship Games or during the season if possible.

You can bet the future Out of Conference games will not include all the crème-filled cupcakes now being lined up by all the major powers with all the extra home games for them in the new contracts.

You also have the option of re-seeding after Round 1 for upsets and the same adjustment criteria used in Round 1 for the Round 2 pairings, or just seed at the playoff start and make no further changes:

NCAA Division I College Football TOP 16 Finalists in Playoffs:

  1. 1-LSU --Winner SEC

  2. 2-Miami -- Winner ACC

  3. 3-Texas ---Winner Big 12

  4. 4-USC   ---Winner – Inter-Conference Playoff

  5. 5-Florida --- Runner up SEC –At Large

  6. 6-Michigan ---Winner Inter-Conference Playoff

  7. 7-California --Winner Inter-Conference Playoff
  8. 8-Oregon  --- Winner Inter-Conference Playoff
  9. 9-Nebraska --- Runner Up Big 12 – At Large

  10. 10-Ohio State --- Runner up Conference Playoff –At Large
  11. 11-West Virginia --Runner up Conference Playoff – At Large
  12. 12-Virginia Tech -- ACC – At Large

  13. 13-Oklahoma -- Big 12 -- At Large

  14. 14-Georgia -- SEC – At Large

  15. 15-Missouri -- Big 12 -- at Large

  16. 16-Boston College --Runner up Conference Playoff –At Large

BRACKETS:

01-16 – Champs, Orlando

08-09 – Insight, Tempe ---------1-8 (Sugar) – (Quarterfinal)

--------------1-4 (Rose --Semifinal)

05-12 – Chick, Atlanta

04-13 – Holiday, San Diego----4-5 (Orange) – (Quarterfinal)

1-2 (Sugar National Championship)

06-11 – Outback, Tampa

 03-14 – Gator, Jacksonville ---3-6 (Fiesta) – (Quarterfinal)

----------------2-3 (Cotton Semifinal)

07-10 – Alamo, San Antonio

02-15 – Capital 1, Orlando ----2-7 (Cotton) – (Quarterfinal)

These teams below 17-32, did not qualify in the new NCAA model due to strength of schedule/quality wins, or at-large teams having higher ratings. For this example 2 teams which both lost conference playoffs did not make the TOP 16.

Quite an impressive list to choose from for the other bowl games.

  1. 17-Wisconsin -- Runner Up Inter-Conference Playoff
  2. 18-Florida State ACC

  3. 19-Clemson ACC

  4. 20-Kansas --Big 12

  5. 21-Tennessee SEC

  6. 22-Notre Dame --- Runner Up Inter-Conf. Playoff
  7. 23-Louisville Big East

  8. 24-Oregon State -- PAC 10
  9. 25-BYU  -- MWC
  10. 26-TCU -- MWC
  11. 27-Alabama --SEC
  12. 28-Penn State --Big 11
  13. 29-UCF -- USA
  14. 30-Georgia Tech --ACC
  15. 31-Texas A&M – Big 12
  16. 32-Hawaii --WAC

Using the December 2012 Calendar for the inaugural year of implementation for a timing example: The 3 Conference Championships games and 4 new automatic qualifier Inter-conference games are on December 8th. The 15th week from the September 1st Saturday kickoff, or a regular season of 14 weeks—2 bye weeks.

The first round of 8 NCAA Playoff games are on Saturday December 15th at the second tier bowl sites from this list below, or add a few more bowls sites.

Capital 1 in Orlando --  Gator in Jacksonville -- Chick-Fil-a in Atlanta – Outback Bowl in Tampa – Insight Bowl in Tempe – Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio --  Holiday Bowl in San Diego --  Champs Bowl in Orlando -- These are 16 great teams and 8 great sites. You could easily geographically place them for easy flying or driving.

Rounds 2 & 3, or the next 7 games get a round robin of the 5 great historical bowl destination stops, and of course, the National Semifinals on New Year's Day. The Rose Bowl will always get a New Year's bowl due to the economic impact of the Parade and its national iconic status -- (that final sticky issue now resolved).

Round 2 lag between the first round and second round will be 6-8 days later or Friday December 21st/Saturday December 22nd, and of course depending on the NFL Playoffs.

The Final Four on New Year's Day, Tuesday January 1st,  and of course depending on the NFL Playoffs.

The 5 Premier Historical Sites, plus maybe add some in the future:

Same as the BCS uses now, plus the new Cotton Bowl Palace – The Fiesta, New Arlington (Cotton), Sugar, Orange, Rose, and maybe even a non-premier domed site could be added to the 4 quarter-final games, (Say the new Indianapolis and St. Louis), but the 2 National Semi-finals and 1 National Championship final game have to be in a legacy traditional BCS and Bowl history stomping grounds from one of the above 5 Premier sites. This is not to say some new domed or warm weather stadium could not be included in the future into the sites for the Final 7 games.

Respectfully Submitted,

Stephen J. Salerno, Boston College Eagle 1974, Fort Worth, Texas

BC 8 DOWN -- 6 TO GO! BLOG OF THE CENTURY WINNER!
Oct 26, 2007 | 8:19AM | report this
2007 Boston College Season Preview -- "THE BIG EASY!" Jul 28, 2007 | 10:28AM - This I my 2nd BC Season preview on this BLOG.

I accept full responsibility for this 10 year TOBlunders0-10 -- Tom O'Brien --blight on BC, but reading the magazines and watching ESPN lather praise on the "disciplinarian", I guess I and many others, well, we never drank that polluted media kool-aid and just concentrated on the performance track record, in game coaching, play calling and the pitiful 8-21, or 28% pathetic record versus Top 25 Teams. Our Marine Supply Officer was mainly a patsie killer.

In 2004, my preview title was “No Excuses”, and of course our former resident clown TOblunders0-10 gave us 3 more WTF’s, as he also did in 2003, with Wake Forest -3, Pittsburgh -10, and of course Syracuse -12, and cost us a BCS Bunny getting torched by 27, at home on Senior Day.

In 2005, my preview was ““Just get Nasty”, and the clown gave us the full metal jacket of Quintina “Pick6” Porter starting over loud fan objections and even the louder players objections, and North Carolina -5, cost us a ACC Title shot and a possible BCS Bowl.

Versus UNC, our cowardly Ginger punted at mid-field with 8:35 left in the 4th, with a short 4th and 4, a red hot Ryan, and down 2 scores. The worst yellow wimp moment in BC football history. After that, it was too late for Ryan to save the patient that Nemo Bible and Blunders butchered.

In 2006, BC had a beautifully spaced schedule and the teams played BC had games before and after us that was to BC's favor.

My preview was ““Just Let it Rip”, and of course as soon as we get a small lead [---in of course the new high powered CFA passing game---], our juvenile Nemo Bible and the incompetent Blunders try and run out the clock early in the 3rd quarter, or halftime, which of course led to North Carolina State -6, [Wake Forest -4; exception], and Miami -4.5 and cost us a ACC Title shot and BCS Bowl.

Then on December 6th, the Football Gods Redeemer came to Chestnut Hill.

“The Lord delivered my people from the bitter bondage of the wicked Puscadores!” A scoop first posted nationwide by me on another site!

Say Halleluiah Eagle Nation!

In 2007, BC has a badly spaced schedule and a very rough slate.

I predicted 14-0 last year and aforementioned, BC lost 3 as a favorite and lost those 3 to freshman quarterbacks in 2006, so mea culpa for having a flicker of faith in this now gone miserable jerk loser and his staff.

2006 was yet another year BC coulda ran the table, yet no one in the media sees the horrible WTF Track Record history on the other tacked thread as TOBlunders0-10 lives life large like many incompetents and losers who daywalk this earth.

The poor die-hard football fools at NC State will learn shortly that Fowler was sold out by his "consulting and advisory" team. Poor Wolfpack Nation, unless the Blunders and Nemo change their incompetent ways? Could happen? I doubt it.

BC had 2 seasons where the dreams ended with poor, scared and pathetic head Coaching and Coordinator timidness and all our losses were as favorites. In 2004, BC has 2 as a double digit favorite.

There is no team that BC can’t beat, so berate me for seeing another 14-0 season, and why not? Please, do not act surprised or shocked when this happens!

We have one of the best QB's in America , the kid is healthy and stronger now and has grit and will finally be unleashed and maybe our defense seals up some cracks. We have a lotta smart, gritty, hungry, motivated players coming back!

This shall happen, and Boston College is going to New Orleans 01-07-08 .

I need to get to Vegas or have someone get a 200-1 bet down for me on the Eagles.

NOW 150-1 or less. I can move the lines in Vegas.

The Big Easy. I hope to be there so we can eat at all the great places.

************THE ANALYSIS*************

>>>>>>>>THE WEAKNESSES

Frank Spaziani ---not my returning choice after the NCSU Hail Mary and 4-3-4 defense he had in after a timeout---needed a summer tour to a Defensive Coaches clinic like Chizik at Iowa State and maybe one other trip, or spend some quality time with Belicheck?

I find the decision to keep Spaziani a high risk deal and even higher if BC doesn't blitz, have lots of new blitz packages, and jam receivers and have much better aggressive defensive schemes.

Frank shoulda blitzed, disrupted and shaken those 3 freshman QB's and given them some pounding hits, even if a penalty or two, to rattle their games. But nope, we just try and burn the clock and let them get settled in and get confident and come back and beat us!

Maybe Spaz will upgrade and change, one can only hope Jags and Logan will have some major input or changes.

The new learning curve capacity software is simply not a program that runs on Spaz's hard drive. You get the blue screen of death, or worse WTF losses. Being burned with 3 Hail Mary’s --previously 2 Wake Forest Games-- is still a major black mark that needs erasing.

We are gonna find out by next January. Count me amongst the absolute faithless unless I see Atkins and Dunbar or others side-by-side in Game 1 blitz and kill some QB’s, blitz like Georgia Tech does and others, 2 off the same side and all types of blitz packages and angles and our defensive backs line up within the same time zone as the opposition receivers.

Other weaknesses that I gleamed from watching and reading is:

1-- We need another nasty cornerback to step up and play tight.

2-- Our Strong Safety needs to step up and start making some pass coverage plays.

3-- Our linebackers need to be more aggressive and use our speed LB’s on our deep roster.

4-- LV and Andre are slow. Unless they lost some weight, I hope we see more of Brooks, Smith and anyone else. I say replace the 2 Seniors early and often. We need a speed threat and breakaway runner if Ryan gets the passing game going early.

5—Now that Nemo Bible sleeps with the fishes, its step up time for our TE’s and WR’s, and no drops. BC's TE's need to be the weapons they were in the past.

>>>>>>>>>>THE STRENGTHS:

1-- Matthew Ryan staying healthy and assuming leadership with Logan . This to me will be the “Bobby Orr Difference Maker” in the BC season. Full mobility and a mentor that doesn’t sit on the ball like Nemo hatching an egg, Do not forget Chris Crane is a big strong guy so BC has the trigger position covered. Major edge in case of any injury!

I see BC and Ryan starting hot and scoring first and fast and giving our defense a chance to freelance and take chances and this strategy is my key to running the table, since Spaz may be willing to blitz more with a nice ead instead of blitzing to force mistakes and get an early lead when tied or behind?

Jump on them quick and kill them early!

2-- Our defensive line. Depth, power, size, we have 4 huge guys, and some real talent. If BC ever gets pushed around and we don’t take tons of blitz chances at LB, then shame on us and see you at 8-4 or worse with this schedule.

3—Our offensive line. I read the baloney on the zone blocking and then looked at the returning starters and others. Please. Like Zone blocking or any variation is a major mystery? You see a different color and knock it on its butt. What's the big problem?

This is not Medical school.

**********THE SCHEDULE******************

BC: 7 Offensive and 9 Defensive returning starters.

The number is my personal ranking of degree of difficulty considering each teams returning starters, QB’s and returning letterman depth.

Teams 2 through 8 are so close, any team can be interchanged, so no offense intended!

Sept. 1 Wake Forest 8
Sept. 8 NC State 9
Sept. 15 at Georgia Tech 5
Sept. 22 Army 12
Sept. 29 Massachusetts 11
Oct. 6 Bowling Green 10
Oct. 13 at Notre Dame 6
Oct. 20 Open
Oct. 25 at Virginia Tech (Thursday) 1
Nov. 3 Florida State 2
Nov. 10 at Maryland 7
Nov. 17 at Clemson 4
Nov. 24 Miami 3

Those are my rankings of toughest games from 1-12. Here is my schedule by game reasoning:

Sept. 1 Wake Forest -- Next Game: Nebraska

Wake Forest : 9 Offensive and 5 Defensive returning starters. Last year WF 21- BC 14.

These guys have been over achieving for years with a great Coach. BC is bigger, stronger and when Ryan got unleashed he killed WF through the air, but BC was playing from behind. I see a BC victory 31-15. When I rank WF 8, and they owned us, you can see how I ranked the rest of the teams and how difficult this schedule will be. Sam Swank is a huge weapon if the game is close, --YIKES--, but we recruited some kid named Bennett who will be his equal one day and may surprise with a boomer!

Season: 1-0 ACC: 1-0 Division 1-0.

Sept. 8 NC State -- Previous Game: UCF -- Next Game: WTFWofford.

NCSU: 8 Offensive and 6 Defensive returning starters. Last year NCSU 17- BC 15.

Ain’t no Hail Mary gonna save this sad, ungrateful, overpaid bad mouthing TOblunders0-10. BC players send a message that the leaving comments by this clown were heard and BC has a much higher ceiling, with a real Head Coach.

Mike Archer, a defensive wizard, may keep it close, but this NCSU offense gets Nemo and stuffed. I see BC pulling away late for a 34-13 win and two WTF’s from last year are reversed.

Season: 2-0 ACC: 2-0 Division: 2-0

Sept. 15 AT Georgia Tech -- Previous Game: Samford -- Next Game: At Virginia .

GT: 7 Offensive and 8 Defensive returning starters. Last year DNP.

I thought Reggie Ball was more bad than good. This is a solid team and a solid Head Coach and one of the best defensive coordinators in America in Tenuta.

This game will be a real test for Matt Ryan versus a sophisticated, magnificent, aggressive defense and blitzing system. Maybe BC sees that after being 2-0 and GT maybe upsetting Notre Dame at ND in the opener, maybe BC can eke out a win knowing it’s the first of 5 rough road warrior events.

BC 16 GT 14

Season: 3-0 ACC: 3-0 Division 2-0.

Sept. 22 Army -- Previous Game: AT Wake Forest -- Next Game: Temple

Army: 6 Offensive and 6 Defensive returning starters. Last year DNP.

Matthew Ryan gets to the middle of the Heisman Trophy race with a 56-6 blowout win.

Season 4-0 ACC: 3-0 Division 2-0

Sept. 29 UMASS -- Previous Game: AT Maine Next Game: Villanova DNP Last Year.

Matthew Ryan goes higher in the Heisman Trophy race with a 38-17 win. I hate playing hard nosed scrappy Division 1-AA teams who have a chip on their shoulder and UMASS is a great AA program with great coaching and kids.

I wanted Texas in Austin. I saw cranes there last week adding like 20,000 seats and a practice grass field that looked like Augusta for 300+ yards and the indoor practice center. Alas, our AD turned down a great long term home and home and broke lots of BC GUY hearts!

When Texas calls, you even take a 4 road and 3 home deal!

BC's neighbor's treat us like criminals over the past 144 years and we have pumped billions into their hoods.

Time to build a retractable 75,000 seat dome on the new St. John's land and more in my future VISION post, like Jerry "Boss Hogg" Jones did for the Cowboys and say...Enjoy!

Season 5-0 ACC: 3-0 Division 2-0

Oct. 6 Bowling Green -- Previous Game: West. Kent . -- Next Game: Miami Ohio .

BG: 7 Offensive and 8 Defensive returning starters. Last year DNP.

This is the quintessential trap game versus a solid MAC team. Last year BC was one tipped pass away from a major National TV MAC Chippewa embarrassment at the hands of run out the clock at halftime loser TOBlunders0-10.

If BC looks ahead to Notre Dame, BC will be in big trouble with a team that has WR’s and can throw, but alas, the two major #### Puscaodore’s are now NCSU’s problem.

BC wins a shootout 34-24.

Season 6-0 ACC: 3-0 Division: 2-0

Oct. 13 AT Notre Dame -- Previous Game: AT UCLA -- Next Game: USC.

ND: 4 Offensive and 5 Defensive returning starters. Last year DNP.

The reason I have this as BC’s 6th toughest game is the above. ND had huge graduation losses and no Brady Quinn. ND recruited well, but its schedule is more imbalanced than BC with 8 tough games and 4 lesser “creampuffs”.

You heard it here first. If this ND doesn’t jell early, it could be 1-5 or 2-4, and that would be bad in one way, since UCLA should beat them the week before.

Me, I am hoping ND beats UCLA! GO IRISH versus the Bruins!

No way ND beats USC, so with 4 easier games after USC, and ND may actually need this BC win for a bowl game. ND will be one monster battle, since ND recruited very well in the past years and this year!

SCARY GAME -- as always!

This game is the season tipping point for greatness or whatever comes next.

The ND fans, The Irish Blind Eyes, have circled this game for years with the BC upsets and 4 straight wins. Going 5-0 will make the Irish faithful explode with anger and shame. Please wear the green uni's again.

In the old days, ND would always win games in the BC position in the many road snake pits due to talent and players.

BC is more experienced and talented and has Matthew Ryan and I like our chances to go 6-0, and Dome shuts down in anguish and humiliation after BC wins for the 5th straight time.

Jesus loves the Eagles. I will have a price on my melon, until I get a letter of dispensation from the PopeB16.

That ain’t gonna happen kids with a sharp and ready Ryan.

BC wins 33-21. Matthew Ryan is at or near the top of the Heisman race and BC is now a contender for the title, but alas, the season is just begun.

Season 7-0 ACC 3-0 Division 2-0

Oct. 25 at Virginia Tech (Thursday) Previous Game: Duke -- Next Game: At GT.

VT: 8 Offensive and 8 Defensive returning starters. Last year BC 22-3.

VT was embarrassed and humiliated by its play and sideline shenanigans last year. This will be a classic monumental rival battle and BC toughest and most important game in years in terms of what is on the line.

I say a mature BC team with Jags beats the Hokies in a close defensive battle and BC’s defense will have to stop VT. Edge Ryan over Glennon.

This may be the first of 2 since VT has Miami at home. See you in Jacksonville December 1st??? Beating one of the two coastal favorites twice in one season will be a Herculean effort.

BC is ranked higher than at any time in its history with a win.

BC 16 VT 13

Season 8-0 ACC: 4-0 DIVISION: 2-0

Nov. 3 Florida State Previous Game: Duke -- Next Game: At Virginia Tech.

FSU: 6 Offensive and 8 Defensive returning starters. Last year BC 24-19.

Two toughest games back-to-back.

If BC wants to go to Jacksonville , the road goes through beating a revamped and retooled offense in FSU. Would rather have played them in an opener before they get their act together. Matthew Ryan shows why the “ICEMAN FOR THE HEISMAN” posters all over town and in my bedroom posted over my wedding portrait!

BC is now a contender for the Florida Gator Crown.

BC 38 FSU 27

Season 9-0 ACC: 5-0 DIVISION: 3-0

Nov. 10 Maryland Previous Game: North Carolina -- Next Game: At FSU.

Terps: 8 Offensive and 6 Defensive returning starters. Last year BC 38-16.

If you wanna win National Titles you have to win lots of tough ballgames or lose one early, like Florida did last year, and hope to sneak in with politicking and lobbying. BC ain’t Florida and has to win them all. Maybe the Terps have QB issues is my hope and BC continues to run the final 6 pack gauntlet.

Beating Friedgen 3 in a row is very difficult. This is The Terps last home game for Seniors and Maryland beat some big teams last year. Maryland if their QB gets going quickly, could be in the thick of the ACC Title hunt.

Ryan the Magician pulls out another win and the Heisman is his to lose. BC is one win away from Jacksonville .

BC 30 Maryland 17

Season 10-0 ACC: 6-0 DIVISION: 4-0

Nov. 17 at Clemson Previous Game: Wake Forest -- Next Game: At South Carolina .

Tigers: 5 Offensive and 7 Defensive returning starters. Last year BC 34-33.

Same with the Tigers, I hope they have QB issues late. BC sees the dream is real and very achievable and the ceiling is what the players make it, not what some ungrateful, disloyal, disgruntled, non-conference title Head Coach says it is!

Beating Bowden and Clemson in Clemson 2X, and 3 straight years like Maryland on the road will be a huge accomplishment. This is a 5 pill blood pressure event washed down with pork BBQ!

Clemson does not want to lose to a northern team 3 straight years, 2 at home. UGH! This also is the last home game for Clemson seniors, also a contender for the ACC Title.

Badly spaced schedule unlike last year, but hey, that is what makes Champions. You would like to catch either team before the new QB settles in, but you knew the job was dangerous when you signed up!

BC 24 Clemson 16

The Heisman is now Matthew Ryan’s.

THE ICEMAN COMETH. THE ICEMAN LEAVETH WITH THE STATUE.

BC has a date in Jacksonville with the Coastal Champion, with one game to go, since all division games and tiebreakers are ours.

Season 11-0 ACC: 7-0 DIVISION: 5-0

Nov. 24 MIAMI Previous Game: At Virginia Tech

Canes: 9 Offensive and 7 Defensive returning starters. Last year Miami 17-14.

BC goes up 20-6 at halftime and Jags tells the ABC sideline babe, “Well were up aren’t we, so I am headed to Mary Ann’s ---a local BC Bar ---for a beer and watch the rest of the game doing tequila shooters with the BC babes!”

[An Inside Shot at assclown TOB for last year's arrogant comment at Miami Halftime on National TV and then BC lost!]

Your's truly has a massive coronary event, and the 5th paddle whack at 400 amps starts the loon’s ticker and then Jags says, “Just wanted to make sure my kids knew what was on the line and were paying attention!”. I then take 5 nitro’s and wash it down with a Bud.

BC holds off a furious Miami comeback and wins 37-35. Matthew Ryan wins the Heisman Trophy.

BC with its strength of schedule is ranked Number 1 just ahead of USC and LSU.

Season 12-0 ACC: 8-0 DIVISION: 5-0

Dec. 1 ACC Championship Game in Jacksonville versus Virginia Tech.

Beating VT once is a major chore. Twice with the events of the past year is like I said, a Herculean task, but Lady Luck is with the Eagles and I promised to take us to New Orleans and this season theme, which I know you are all waiting for is.........

“THE BIG EASY!”

BC defense which was maligned and suspect by this writer comes through again and stuffs the classy Hokies and BC wins 30-16.

BC ends the season undefeated and ranked Number 1 in the BCS with the 10 tough games since Bowling Green has a great year, and goes to….New Orleans .

“THE BIG EASY!” is just that.

Season 13-0 ACC: 9-0 CHAMPIONS. DIVISION: 5-0

Jan. 7 BCS Championship Game in New Orleans Sugar Bowl versus USC.

Pete Carroll’s bunch was not tested like our Eagles and if Mack Daddy Brown can out coach him, so can Jags.

In a game to BC’s tempo and passing attack, BC wins an epic Vince Young type of aerial circus against the deep and talented high school All Americans at every position and speed to burn Trojans, and BC continually blitzes Booty and he throws 2 Pick6’s and BC wins, 38-37.

The PopeB16 hands Jags the Glass football!

Yours truly, heads off to collect huge $$$$ in Vegas with his new squeeze Jessica Alba but is tragically hit by a speeding Paris Hilton and wanders off into the desert and Jessica cashes his tickets and says “BCEagle 74 who?”

GDF replaces James Gandolfini in the new HBO series, “The Boston Tenor’s!”

TOBlunders0-10 says, “Well, I recruited those guys and I knew they could do it all along!” and suddenly a deranged naked man covered with sand fires a sharpened poisoned cactus needle through a blowgun and TOblunders0-10 is killed instantly as the mysterious Sandman escapes laughing into the humid* night air.

*A Classic TOBlunders0-10 juvenile deliquent excuse why we lose in Miami!

The End. Go Eagles!

Like I said......The Big Easy!

74's BIG EASY ROAD TO THE FRENCH QUARTER!
Sep 16, 2007 | 8:40AM | report this

I decided to end all this BCS polling and rankings deal early.

------THE UNSWEET 16* UNDEFEATED------

16 in the Hunt!

PACIFIC 10 (3):

No huge Championship Game battle which the BCS should penalize these
conferences for, but life is so unfair and you have to deal with it.

USC ------At Oregon --At California (2)
CAL-------USC -- at Oregon (2)
OREGON-- USC --CAL (2)

Obviously a round robin of upsets would be great and UCLA getting its act together, but with USC, you almost have to put them in one of the two seats on the St. Charles Street trolley.

SEC (4):

The 74 Engineer sliderule says too many great teams and a Championship Game and the SEC goes home crying down the highway. No trolley for you!

Brutal conference!

LSU-----------South Carolina, Florida, at Alab., Arkansas, Auburn --SECCG-Florida(6)
ALA-----------Georgia, at FSU, Tennessee, LSU, at Auburn --SECCG  (6)
South Car-- At LSU, Kentucky, At Tenn, at Ark, Fla, Clemson ---SECCG (7)
Florida-------Auburn, at LSU, Georgia, at South Car, FSU --SECCG--LSU (6)

BIG TEN (3):

Again, no huge Championship Game battle which the BCS should penalize these conferences for, but life is so unfair and you have to deal with it.

Ohio State --At Penn State, Wisconsin, At Michigan (3)
Wisconsin -- At Penn State, Michigan, At Ohio State (3)
Penn State -- At Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin. (3)

Obviously a round robin of upsets would be great and maybe another Big 10 team like Purdue or Michigan zinging one of these teams that wins the 2 knock off games. We Eagles will get lucky here since we have better prayers.

BIG EAST (2):

Again, no huge Championship Game battle, maybe it works against them?

West Virginia --- at USF, at Rutgers, Louisville, at Cinn (4)
Rutgers ---------- Cinn, USF, WVU, at Louisville (4)

74 just became a big huge Cardinal fan! The UK Cats came through for me!

BIG 12 (3):

Oklahoma --- Texas, A&M, at TECH, Oklahoma State, Missouri -- B12CG -NEB (5)
Texas--------- Oklahoma, Tech, at A&M, at Oklahoma State --B12CG --NEB (5)
Missouri------- Nebraska, at Oklahoma, Tech, A&M  --B12CG -- (5)

Oklahoma really looks fast, speedy and like USC. Hopefully Texas Tech outguns them in Lubbock, or Missouri gets hot or Nebraska pulls a CG upset.

Zero University looks tough. UGH... I see Oklahoma and USC as the two teams where BC could use some divine intervention.

ACC (2):

Boston College--- at ND, At VT, Clemson, FSU, Miami ACC CG-- (6)
Clemson----------- at GT, VT, BC, WF, at South Car--ACC CG (6)

BC has to run the table. No 13-0, no possible French Quarter.

None of these undefeated teams above WITH ONE LOSS will get a 1 or 2 BCS seed before the 13-0 Eagles with all the ICEMAN for the HEISMAN hype, being a Cinderella 13-0 and graduating every player!

I will update it when teams fall by the wayside.

74 has the Trolley fares. See you in New Orleans!

THE BIG EASY!

BC Has The Toughest ACC Schedule = BETTER BEAT DIVISION FOES!!
Jul 31, 2007 | 6:04AM | report this

BC has GT, Miami and annual rival VT (3).

The 3 Beasts of the Coastal.

The home opener is where Matt Ryan has to make a 14 game statement and send a message to the Team that he is the man, the leader, wants to win the Heisman and BC needs to play full throttle on every down and take no prisoners and keep the pedal to the metal until the final gun and kill all foes early.

Start to Finish. Intensity, focus and nastiness!

Wake Forest has Virginia, Duke and North Carolina, (0), or the "alleged" bottom 3. -- BC plays WF GAME 1.

If Wake Forest beats BC at home, [4 out of 5], then with the 3 weaker Coastal teams --or the opposite of BC--, that would not be a favorable Atlantic scenario.

Here are the "doubler" conference games and the number of Big 3 Coastal beasts they play and what game we get our division rivals:

NCSU--Has Virginia, Miami and North Carolina (1) --GAME 2
Clemson-- Has VT, Duke and GT. (2) --GAME 11
FSU --Has Duke, Miami, and VT (2) -- GAME 9
Maryland --Has Virginia, GT and North Carolina (1) GAME 10

The good news is FSU and Clemson have 2, but anyway you look at it, BC has to win the 5 division games since one loss and the 3 Coastal Beasts, BC would be hard pressed to get into the ACC Championship Game with a few division losses, but hey, going 14-0 is The Big Easy!

No doubt about it, 3 straight ACC tough tilts to start, and BC will have to be ready from the get go.

WF is Grobe coached, and their kids play hard, smart and tough. Grobe is the best Head Coach in the ACC and a Top 5 Leader in the USA with what he has accomplished at WF.

NCSU will be sky high too and of course full of "discipline", and GT in Atlanta will be brutal, and the early rankings have GT ahead of BC.

32 days to get your business in order and start concentrating on football.

Guess what, they are all tough, -----even Army, BG, ND and even UMASS will be pumped with kids with chips on their shoulder.

KICK IT OFF!

OT:

No whining from the easy cream cheese schedule and out of conference creampuffs of West Virginia who thinks that having a 1 big game schedule of Louisville at home and 12-0 gets them a Championship slot. WVU should be favorites in every game and the Big East is still overrated. Maybe the Mountain men get a nice Friedgen Turtle bite in the butt at Maryland on 09-13.

Louisville ain't much better with Utah. Maybe the Wildcats finally claw Louisville in Lexington, and we don't have to listen to these 2 weak scheduled whiners the whole year.

2007 Boston College Season Preview -- "THE BIG EASY!"
Jul 28, 2007 | 10:28AM | report this

This I my 2nd BC Season preview on this BLOG.

Count me amongst the absolute faithless
