Panthers trade Jenkins to Jets
Feb 29, 2008 | 4:16AM | report this

The New York Jets are the winners in the Kris Jenkins sweepstakes.

FOXSports.com has learned that Carolina traded the defensive tackle to the New York Jets for third- and fifth-round draft picks.

Although he has battled weight issues in the past, Jenkins should provide the big-bodied presence at nose tackle the team has sorely lacked since coach Eric Mangini instituted a 3-4 defensive scheme in 2006. Dewayne Robertson, who was manning the spot for New York, seems likely to get traded elsewhere. Robertson is better suited as a penetrating-style tackle in a 4-3 defensive scheme.

Jenkins had 38 tackles and 2.5 sacks last season while starting 15 of 16 games for Carolina. But that wasn’t good enough for the Panthers, who wanted to avoid having to pay Jenkins a $1 million roster bonus due next week.

Damione Lewis, who was re-signed earlier this month, is expected to replace Jenkins in the starting lineup.

I guess the Jets didnt get the memo that you build your team through the draft. They had what, like 3 picks TOTAL last year. Jets will be lucky of they get a full season out of Jenkins, he is constantly hurt, not to mention he is not what he used to be. whatever, glad I am not a jets fan

READ THE 2nd SENTENCE! ar 3rd and 5th ROUND pick. As long as the Jets can get another NT to rotate in w/Jenkins when he gets a little winded- good job. remember- you win with Defens-the days of building through the draft ended when Free Agency came arround-why wouldnt Carolina keep him?

Where do you guys get your info from? the guy was traded for 3rd and 5th round picks, also why would he live up to a top 5 pick when he was drafted in the second round?

he was probably due too much money next season, and Lewis was a really good addition to the line this past year. I would have thought the Panthers would have gotten more for him... 3rd and 5th sound a bit sad, but hopefully they will be able to draft some good defensive help for next year... or maybe a couple of good offensive linemen... since besides at quarterback (yikes) that is where they were the weakest last year

As a jets fan this is a great trade and maybe our biggest NEED on Defense. J Vilma is gone now because we haven't had someone to protect him. Look at the Raven, Ray Lewis was great because he had a big body in front of him. We don't need Jenkins to be a Pro Bowler we need him to be a middle of the line clog! Great trade and we still have Robertson who is out of place for trade to get those picks back! Plus what we got in the Vilma trade. It actually looks like the Front office finally figured this D need thing out. Now if we can fix the QB position we may have a chance.

3rd & 5th round picks???

That doesn't sound like too much to give up...

The Jets get a third-round pick back when they complete the trade for Vilma, so this is Jenkins for a 5th round pick, plus you can add in the value of whatever they get back for Robertson (even though his value is shot cause they traded 2 first rounders to get up to use a first rounder to get him, so already he's a bust that was worth 3 first round picks, but hey you gotta cut your losses right?) This could be a big move for the Jets, especially if they aren't done and get in the Shaun Rogers or Marcus Stroud sweepstakes

The only thing that I don't like about this trade for the Jets is that I have a feeling that if they waited, the Panthers may have cut him to avoid the roster bonus. Not to mention the fact that Jenkins seems like he plays when he wants to.

People are acting like a 3 and a 5 are not a lot to give up, but when you are a team that needs as much as the Jets, the picks to me all have value.

@DogDirt. Building through the draft is very important. Very few teams build through free agency. This isn't Baseball.

And for the people asking what the 1st poster is talking about when he talks about a top 5 pick. He isn't talking about the Jets giving up a top 5 for Jenkins, or Jenkins being a top 5 pick. He is talking about Robertson. Maybe you should read more carefully.

The Jets 3rd and 5th picks from 2006 (did not have those picks last year) were Anthony Schlegel and Jason Pociask.. I'd rather roll the dice on Jenkins then end up with guys like that ..Good deal J E T S Jets Jets Jets !!

bobben,

I hear what you are saying, but you are looking at only the bad picks. You can definitely get a good player in the 3rd round and even in the 5th round every now and again.

I just think that:
A. The Jets need help at many positions
B. They have no QB so this is a rebuilding team
C. I think that Jenkins may have been cut

I have been a Panther season ticket holder since the team came into the league and have seen my share of ups and downs, trust me!! I am very glad we were able to get compensation for Jenkins seeing that his contract would have been up after 2008 season anyway. He is good and should be a solid addition for you all. But draft picks are always a good thing when you are trying to get younger and more versatile. As for the QB issue, Jake is coming along great and should be ready for training camp. Besides Matt Moore was a pleasant surprise and no more David Carr

Only1LT.. yes, you can get good value in 3 and 5, but the Jets do not seem to be a team that has been able to.. Aside form the 06 i posted above, their 2005 3rd and 5th were Sione Pouha and Andre Maddox.. Again, I say good deal !!

Anytime you can add a Pro Bowler for unproven picks you win. When the Jets unload Robertson that is going to open up more cap space. Rumor has it they will try for Fanaca from the Steelers and we all know they want Samuels from N.E. They are going to recieve some picks from the Vilma trade so not to worry. Hey .......at least the Jets management is trying to improve instead of playing high drafted picks that aren't working out. I hate to see Vilma go he is a stud....but a knee injury? Good Riddance Robertson hopefully someone will grab him soon.

melbz66 was talking about Robertson, the Jets current NT. He was a top 5 pick who hasn't panned out.

I think this was a key hole on the D. I hate to see Vilma leave as well, but without a big body in the middle of the 3-4 the Defense doesn't work. This will make the whole D better. Faneca is almost a shoe-in for the Jets so that answers the OL problem. I do agree we are hurting at QB but I wouldn't say we are rebuilding. We need to add the OLB/DL from OSU in the draft and another WR. I don't think we are going answer the QB question this year unless we take a gamble on a retred or Clemens makes some kind of miraculous improvement over the summer!

Please know what you are talking about before you waste space.

This trade is very good for the Jets.

We get a big man in the middle, without losing Vilma or Robertson. Now we can pick up several draft pick for them.

Vilma to saints for a conditional pick.

Robertson will get us a decent 1st day pick.

Jenkins is a great fit, he is a big boy and Mangini will light a Match under his #### and get him moving.

I don't think that you can assume that Jenkins will be motivated by Mangini. Fox is no push over and the Panthers had higher expectations than the Jets. If he was not motivated to play on a team that some experts thought was a Super Bowl contender (I didn't), why would he be motivated to play for a rebuilding team?

And yes the Jets are rebuilding. When you have no QB, you are rebuilding. I have never been a Chad or Clemens fan, so I don't think that they have a QB on the roster. Even if you think Clemens is the answer, if he wins the job, he would be a 1st year full time starter. Teams that have a first year full time starter at QB are still rebuilding.

well if mangini doesnt get him motivated.... i am pretty sure that 5 year deal worth 35 million he just signed with jets shoudl do the job,

The Jets are high on Simon Piola - huge run stuffing DT that received a lot of PT at the end of the year when the Jets D drastically improved. He will be in the rotation. I also believe they will go with Gholston at DE in the draft.

skeahon19,

If you should have learned anything from watching sports it's that getting a huge contract never motivates anyone. No if you don't have a contract, and you are playing for one, then yes that is motivating.

But getting a huge contract, if anything, can sometimes have the effect of making athletes more complacent lol.

Had the Jets waited a week, they'd have got Jenkins for nothing. The Panthers were most likely going to cut him rather than paying him a roster bonus. As it is, I'm glad the Cats got a 3rd and 5th for him.

I think he'll be motivated to play in New York. While he's not the player he was in 2003 (he was a BEAST then), he can still be productive as part of a NT rotation.

..Still want the JET "D" to go to a 4-3 scheme, although Robertson is a beast in the middle. Vilma is now in NOLA. Don't they run a 3-4 scheme on "D"? Would have liked to see JV as the MIke LB in the 4-3 scheme. Oh, well. J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!
