It's not often that Brenden Morrow produces a major gaffe. He picked a bad time to deliver an unfortunate one Friday night October 12. Matthew Lombardi converted Morrow's giveaway at the Dallas blueline with his second goal of the game with 1:40 left in overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Stars at American Airlines Center. Lombardi tied the game with a goal midway through the third period, and Jarome Iginla had a first-period goal for the Flames, who won for the first time this season. Coming in, Calgary was one of only two teams (Atlanta) who had yet to win a game this season.
"It wasn't anybody's fault out there but my own," Morrow said. "My teammates rely on me to make those plays, and the onus is completely on me."
Skating with the puck in the neutral zone, Morrow sent a soft, backwards pass towards Dallas defenseman Philippe Boucher. But Boucher was already heading up ice, and the puck slid free into the Dallas zone. Lombardi, with a head of steam, darted after the loose puck and immediately ripped a shot that eluded goalie Marty Turco to the short side.
"I thought Brenden had full control on that last play," Boucher said. "It's my full responsibility to stay back, and it ended up costing us the game."
