Marcos Ambrose Is Third Among Busch Regulars
May 31, 2007 | 10:33PM | report this

Marcos Ambrose currently sits 13th in the NASCAR Busch Series standings and is third among Busch regulars.  This weekend Ambrose will make his second start at Dover International Speedway, a tough, portland cement concrete surfaced one-mile oval known as ‘The Monster Mile’.  The Australian was 27th in his fifth race in last year’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Dover.  Ambrose will be looking for his fourth Raybestos Rookie of the Race Award this weekend as he seeks to improve on his third place in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings.

Ward Burton Threatens Sterling Marlin
May 08, 2007 | 8:20PM | report this

"I was going to ease out not wanting to be three wide and I think the 14  hit me from behind.  He had been acting impatient there before.  I will damn sure pay him back I promise you that," stated Burton after the Jim Stewart 300 in Richmond Virginia on Sunday.

Uh NASCAR, have you sent an invitation to Mr. Burton to visit you in the big yellow trailer?  I'll be looking to see that you did.  I mean, Tony Stewart didn't threaten anyone did he?  This sure sounds like "actions detrimental to the sport of auto racing" to me.

Meanwhile Sterling Marlin was all class, "Well he's excited.  We raced hard all day and hardly touched all day.  I got loose and when you get loose you correct and the front end goes up.  If that's what he thinks that's what he thinks."

How about this Mr. Burton, the next time Dave Blaney has a little trouble and needs to slow up, don't stick your nose in the middle of a three wide situation and you will not have a problem.  When you stuck your nose in there you should have gone on with it.  Sterling thought you were and he was going behind you.  When you decided you had screwed up and checked up Sterling was committed.  You lost.  Stick to your commitment next time.  Or check up yourself next time and Sterling won't be trying to follow you through.  But if you yes, no, wait, maybe, next time, you'll get hit again.

In conclusion I have two words for Mr. Burton. "BUSCH RACING" Ward "BUSCH RACING."

You can hear it for yourself here.

Let’s Play Jeopardy!

Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick, Dave Blaney, David Reutimann, Bobby Hamilton Jr., Matt Kenseth, David Regan and Kyle Busch.

What is a list of Nextel Cup drivers?

Almost…. The list is actually the top eight in the NASCAR Busch Series Point’s Championship.  Seven of the eight are Nextel Cup drivers, fifth place Bobby Hamilton, Jr. is the only true Busch Series driver among the top eight in the series standings following the Talladega Superspeedway race.  The driver of the McDonald’s Ford has his sights set on climbing further up the point’s ladder next week in Richmond.  With a solid and consistent 12th place finish on Saturday, Hamilton climbed four positions in the standings to fifth.

Edwards Extends Points Lead
Apr 07, 2007 | 10:27PM | report this

Carl Edwards raced to his second consecutive NASCAR Busch Series victory, easily winning the Pepsi 300 in chilly conditions Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway to extend his lead in the season standings.  The Nextel Cup driver led the final 25 laps and crossed the finish line 4.7 seconds ahead of David ReutimannDave Blaney, who was involved in an early fracas, rallied to finish third.  Jason Leffler was fourth, followed by Regan Smith.

More interesting to this writer was the fact that we finally got to look at a true Busch Series Race.  Yes there were a few Cup drivers and Edwards won.  But Edwards is running the full season so I am down with that.

And Cup regulars won second and third place today.  But Reutimann and Blaney are by no means NASCAR giants.  Don't get me wrong, that's not smack.  I like both guys.

Then there was Leffler and Smith, true Busch guys in fourth and fifth.  Yes Smith is driving Cup for Ginn Racing when Mark Martin is practicing retirement.  But that is by no means full time Cup.  And I have no problem with that.  Word is Leffler will attempt a few Cup races with members of the old ppc racing team too.  Good for them.  They know they aren't likely to win, they are doing it for the fun of it.

And look at the standings.  We have pure Busch racers in spots 6 through 10.

Sixth is Marcos Ambrose Jr.  He is a little wary of his Busch skills but was glad to have his family join up with him this week for most of the remainder of the season.

Bobby Hamilton Jr. promised to move to the top of the "Busch" guys and he did that today.  Only Ambrose is ahead of him by Hamilton's definition of "Busch."  Hamilton is seventh in the points.

Shane Huffman, he of USAR Hooters Pro Cup fame and a true up and comer, just wait and see, is up to eighth

Mike Wallace holds onto ninth after a rougher day today in the Geico gecko car.  Yes Mike runs some Cup races but he doesn't kid himself about being a Cup racer these days. However, I do think that cousin Warren of his is scaring him.

And Stephen Leicht had a good run today and moves up to 10th.

Cheers!  For Busch drivers. Head for the Mountains!

How Do You Define Buschwacker?

This blog is a copy of two of my responses, one to JayJayDean and one to photographer on JayJay's blog.  O.K., I admit it.  I am a bit conceited.  I think these responses are decent enough to merit their own blog.  But more than that I wanted to save the info where I could find it later.

The true Buschwackers are;

1. Ward Burton
2. Kyle Busch
3. David Gilliland
4. Kevin Harvick
5. Matt Kenseth
6. Reed Sorenson

These are Nextel Cup regulars that run only the companion Busch events which in my mind is the pure definition of a Buschwacker. Let's call them Type I wackers.

http://motorsport.com/photos/popup.asp?N=4&I=n
ascar-busch/2007/br/nascarbus-2007-br-as-0005.jpg&
FS=NASCAR-BUSCH&SN=1_12.216.8.136:53500&S=NASCAR-B
USCH

Then there are those that are at least more honorable in that they are running all Busch Series events so that they could be termed Nextel and Busch regulars. Let's call them Type II wackers.

They include;

1. Greg Biffle
2. Dave Blaney
3. Carl Edwards
4. Juan Pablo Montoya
5. David Ragan
6. David Reuttiman
7. J. J. Yeley

Adding all of the Type I and Type II wackers together gives you 13 Nextel Cup drivers that make up the majority of the wackers by running Busch races roughly 85% of the time.

http://bobbyhamiltonjr.com/2007/Photos/Tracks
/Vegas/VEGAS2007%20%20030907%20%20_8286W.jpg

/p>

Then add the 12 Busch regulars and you have the typical 25 cars you normally see in Busch races. The remaining 18 cars are pretty much field fillers whether they are "Mexican" road racers or "American" oval racers.

photo,

The fact that there are 13 wackers discourages decent mid-level racers from running the Busch series, so they go run trucks. That is what leaves approximately 18 local field fillers that run Busch that at best might be qualified to run trucks regularly. You take these 18 to Bristol and you get a wreckfest.

This is why NASCAR needs to

1) Allow the top 35 from the previous season to run a full Nextel Cup Season.
2) Have a qualifying school in January for the other 8 positions and you are in all year.
3) Do not allow Nextel Cup drivers to run Busch.
4) Increase Busch Purses to add more incentive for regular truck drivers to run Busch.

Then and only then will we have a healthy Busch series.
