Marlin Wants To Race A Competitive Car
Aug 01, 2007 | 7:23PM | report this

Look, Bill can tell a story better than I can, so why would I want to add to it or detract from it.  Check out these excerpts and then the full article if you have time.  It's a good piece.  Cheers!

By Bill Weber, NASCAR.COM

Sterling said most of the legal issues -- meaning contract and money -- have been worked out, so he can look for a ride.  He said he doesn't have one.

"I can drive if I want to," Marlin said.  "Next year I was going to cut back anyway, wasn't gonna plan on running the full deal, unless a really good car come along to run.  I was gonna cut back to 15 or 20 races, and if that didn't come off it didn't.  So maybe I would run a few Busch races just to keep your hand in it, have a good time.  You enjoy racing so if I don't do that we'll drive a Late Model at Nashville."

So at least we can watch him race there! I'm hoping we'll see him somewhere else before that, but, maybe not.

The fan reaction to the Sterling Shuffle has been predictable.  I'm not talking about the Internet, I'm talking about fans that come up to you and ask, "What happened to Sterling?" "Why did they do that to Sterling?"  The rear windows of the Chevy Tahoe I saw driving around Indianapolis when I arrived on Wednesday: "Save Sterling from Ginn Racing ... the last resort", a shot at another business interest of car owner Bobby Ginn.

Marlin, make that Sterling -- it's hard to call Sterling by his last name -- knows all about the fan response.

"Yeah, I heard the Web site stuff was crammed full and I guess the Ginn Web site got blasted, I don't know, but I want to thank all the fans for all the years and it's been great. The fans are what make it all go 'round so I want to thank them all for supporting me all the years."

Thanks for the clue-phone. I got to where I barely travel over to their site due to poor writing, but BW is one of the guys that can and does get it.

Funny just how a few short years so much can change. Runt, those screaming engines and the Daytona wins~

and bad luck on the contest thing, Falcons....I was hoping you'd make it since you're honest and straight up about stuff and you know your racing (same goes for photo)

Wishing Marlin the best....Isnt it funny how nascar went from being a sport, and not that many years ago, that Dale Sr. was borrowing every part of his race car, along with money just to be able to enter a race to one with endless pockets nowdays....And yes when we hit 40 in nascar nowdays, with a few exceptions, But your on your way out....Maybe its time for a senior class of Nascar, I really like Marlin, everything from his raceing style right up to his interviews. Hes a class act all the way. And heck ask him any given Friday what the score of the Tennessee games gonna be and hes gonna give it to you... Not forsure how many years he has left in him, but gonna miss him around the track...Best highlight is still the one of him climbing from his car to pull a fender out at Daytona, After he and Gordon got together....lol....And he didnt lose points or get fined either.....

Kick MacReynolds off the sports desk, put him back to work in the garage, go get Kodak back on the car, and put Sterling back where he belongs. Out front in clean air.

Because he got black flagged and DIDN'T WIN THE DAYTONA 500.

Sterling is in a position similar to that of a football coach that has been fired. Typically, they get paid for whatever time remains on their contracts unless they get a different job, and if that job pays less the team that fired the coach makes up the difference between the new contract and the old one.

I'd imagine it's tougher to work out that deal with a race car driver's contract, since it isn't based on one single dollar amount, but a combination of salary, merchandise revenue, and race winnings.

Has there been any comment from the Ginn camp on this? It sounds like Sterling is saying "give me all the money on my contract and let me race, too". I think if I were Ginn I'd try to negotiate a buyout before I let Sterling jump in another car.

nice piece falc as usual jay jay another stirling moment was when stirling was caught on camera running into the back of the tide trailer looking for that rudd feller to remind him about the rules of engagement...and yep that kodak car with stirling was a force to be reckoned with !!! stirling unlike some other veterans still has the fire inside and the want to compete . i hope he gets the situation to win a few more !!

mad,

Let's ban Cup drivers from Busch so we can see the young guns and the old dogs go at it in the Busch Series.

QMTR,

That's why the MMM rumor was so easily swallowed.

JJ,

Whatever the deal is, it is done.

Now go write a winning post. If you lose this round, then you'll know the contest just is not right.
