    Schilling and the sock

Thursday, April 26, 2007, 02:58 PM EST [Boston Red Sox]

Is that blood on the sock or not?

Gary Thorne doesn't think so. The Red Sox say otherwise.

The issue of whether Yankee nemesis Curt Schilling used a marker to give the appearance of blood on his injured ankle during Boston's Game 6 win over New York in the 2004 ALCS is just like, well that sock that sticks to the inside of your washer and won't go away.

Orioles announcer Thorne claimed the bloody sock was a hoax while Schilling beat Baltimore on Wednesday night, saying "It was painted. (Red Sox catcher) Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR."

Mirabelli, among others, says this is hogwash.

So what do you think? Was that real blood seeping though the sock of Schilling, whose ankle injury ended up sidelining him for much of the 2005 season?

Would Schilling resort to a cheap bit of gamesmanship like using a magic marker to gain a mental edge? Or is this just more sour grapes from Yankees fans, who still can't believe Schilling and Co. caused their team to suffer the worst choke in the history of American pro sports?
