First of all I said, as did others, that Ohio did not know what they were getting themselves into playing the Gators, because of their team speed and the physical way they played. What was said in rebuttal was that Ohio also had team speed and was very physical. It was also stated, by me, that Troy smith would be running for his life being chased down by the Gator defensive front and the receiver's would be covered. That was just the defensive side of the ball.
Why did the Gators win? Simple they are the better team, played a stronger schedule with tougher opponents have more athletes and are better coached.
Coaching: Tressell failed to prepare his team for the offensive scheme that the gators run. I said this and was told that I did not know what I was talking about. You cannot run a zone defense against the gator offensive scheme because they will pick you apart and that is what happened. Tressell failed to get his team ready for the physical part of this game and guess they thought they could just mail a performance in. The Buckeyes were slow, lacked a balanced defensive plan and got beat on the line offensively and defensively all night long. Tressell failed to tell his team to keep or get in shape because after the first few sets of down Ohio State Buckeyes were sucking wind on the sidelines every time the camera on was them.
Meyer prepared his team put together a scheme with a few additional sets. Otherwise the Gators ran of the basic 7 formations they have used all year but just added a few different schemes to some of those formations. Nothing fancy just simple, logical sets. Meyer used everything the media said and others that the Gators did not deserve to be in this game and that the Ohio State Buckeyes would just roll the gators. Meyer fed that to his team a team that has far more talent than the Buckeyes. Defensively the gator defense was able to heal and that allowed them to rotate the players as they needed and kept pressure on Troy Smith all night long and showed in his inability not to be able to scramble and make completions. But I pointed this fact out 35 days ago that Troy Smith would have serious problems seeing over the pass rush and could not out run the Gator defense. I was told by the Buckeye fans I was did not know what I was talking about.
Players:Ohio State came into the game out of shape and it showed early on when I saw the Buckeye players on the sideline sucking wind only after a few sets. The mythical team speed of the Buckeyes was and is non-existent and the only player that has any was Ginn and the Ohio state players took him out of the game when they piled on him in the end zone. We heard all year long and during the lead up to this game how physical Ohio State played and that would be the difference in the trenches I guess someone forgot to tell the players they needed to bring that with them to the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP game. What other motivation does a team need to have than that they are playing in the national championship and to get themselves prepared physical and mentally. Ohio State was totally ill-prepared for this game.
The Gators came into this game fully prepared and coached to play in the national championship. They chased, harassed, and physically beat the buckeyes all night long. The buckeyes defense could not stop the gator offense and when the did succeed on a few series of downs it was Meyer testing out his new plays, some worked some were not as successful but at that point the game was already in hand and a few punts wasn't going to hurt them because the buckeyes could do nothing offensively all night long. 84 total yards of offense does not win a pee wee league game. The gator defense controlled the buckeye offense all night long. The one thing I saw that was a tell tale sign of Troy Smith was when he threw a bad pass got sacked or just plain stunk up the field he would smile and laugh. Maybe he knew he was going to get his ass handed to him or maybe he is just like Aaron Brooks in Oakland and he thinks "I fooled everyone, I don't care." or maybe he realizes he is not that good. Maybe the Heisman should be selected after the entire bowl games instead of during the season when it's just a popularity contest.
Tressell failed to prepare his team and his players either played one of the worst games they ever played or the Gators are just that good. The Ohio fans have already and the media started to make excuses and they are:
Ohio had a 51-day lay-off and that is too long a layoff and affects the team. Answer. It is the responsibility of the coaches to make sure the players are working out and keeping in shape and doing those things that are necessary for a competitive game. The players should be motivated enough to understand they are playing in the national championship game and get off their asses and work out and keep in shape. This is just an excuse and that is all it is.
The second thing I have heard is the Ginn was hurt and that affected Ohio State. Well I am sure the Buckeyes had a game plan and a game plan does have contingencies in the event players get hurt. Maybe Ohio State does not have nay depth because if they did this would not even be an issue and it appears no player or players wanted to step up but how could the offense get into any rhythm because the gator defense was in Smith's face all night long and his offensive line could not block anyone.
The reality is the Florida Gators are the number one team in the nation and while Ohio State was undefeated during the regular season they are on the same level as Michigan and not really the best the Big 10 has to offer. Maybe Wisconsin should have been the Big 10 rep in this game. But the fact is Ohio State could not have beaten Boise, LSU or USC last night. Ohio State is 0-8 versus the SEC and I see that Tressell will keep that trend going. Folks the SEC is the toughest conference in college football and Ohio State and Michigan embarrassed the Big 10 but the bright spots are a Wisconsin team that is under-rated and the Penn team that next year is going to be a force not only in the Big 10 but will be in a BCS game next if not the national championship.
