Ecuador sink Sweden 2-1 with first-half goals

QUITO, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Ecuador scored twice in an eight-minute spell during the first half to beat Sweden 2-1 in an international friendly played in the Andean city of Cuenca on Thursday. Both teams fielded sub-strength sides with Sweden bringing a squad of Nordic-based players for their three-match South American tour, which began with a 2-0 defeat in Venezuela last Sunday. Midfielder Eder Vaca opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he beat John Alvbage with a left-foot shot for his first international goal. Carlos Tenorio, one of only two members of last year's World Cup squad in the Ecuador starting line-up, took advantage of slack defending to add the second eight minutes later. Sweden pulled one back when Rade Prica scored with a long-range shot in the last minute. Ecuador held on for the first win in three outings since reaching the second round of the 2006 World Cup. The two sides meet again in Quito on Sunday. (Writing by Brian Homewood in Rio de Janeiro)

    Vitesse - PSV   0 - 1

    News from PSV Web

PSV, who saw off Vitesse 4-0 in a Dutch Cup tie three weeks ago, also claimed a win in the league game at the Gelredome in Arnhem on Saturday night. A goal from Edison Mendez proved to be enough to secure the ninth consecutive victory.

Afellay challenges Van der SchaafBoth coaches had made one change from the teams that had met for a Dutch Cup tie at the beginning of November. Right back Jan Kromkamp missed out through illness and Michael Reiziger took his place in defence. Aad de Mos fielded the Dane Anders Due, a rather unknown player. Both teams took a tentative start to the game. Vitesse started most moves and PSV waited and controlled the game, as they had done so many times on previous occasions. The hosts enjoyed most possession of the ball and created the better chances, but goalkeeper Gomes thwarted efforts from Verhaegh and Pryor in the first fifteen minutes.

PSV scored from their first meaningful attack of the game. On twenty minutes Mendez was given some space during one of the rare counter attacks and the Ecuadorian midfielder unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that sailed into the roof of the net. Buoyed by the goal, the visitors had the upper hand and earned some fine opportunities. Farf

    Felix Borja - Olympiakos

    Felix Borja scores

    News from Olympiakos Web

Olympiacos CFP triumphed 4-0 over Larissa at the "G. Karaiskakis" stadium, on Sunday, November 26, for the Superleague's MD 12. The reds scored an early opener at 14 minutes with Babangida who took great advantage of Rivaldos' cross and ceased scoring until the second half.

At 47' Rivaldo took a shot after a foul and netted the ball, at 65' Borja scored once again for the reds after a pass from Zewlakow and last, but not least, at 90+3, Pappas, who had just substituted Okkas headed the ball into the back of Larissas' net.

OLYMPIACOS CFP: Nikopolidis, Zewlakow, Georgatos, Cesar (73' Ouaddou), Kostoulas, Stoltidis (85' Kafes), Rivaldo, Djordjevic, Okkas (67' Pappas), Borja, Babangida.

LARISSA: Christopoulos, Dabizas, Vallas (56' Ballis), Venetis, Katsiaros, Kleiton, Bassila, Aloneftis (65' Hatziliontas), Gikas, Kiparissis (79' Ziagas), Kalantzis.

Following the end of the game against Larissa, Olympiacos CFP head coach, Mr. Trond Sollied, commented: "After a European game, the next local match is always dangerous. I am happy with the way we played. Some of the players were given a better chance. It was a good thing that we had control of the match without bursting out. We were patient and passed the ball around very well. Larissa got tired and made it easier for us to score.

Domi was not feeling very well, that's why he was not included in the delegation.

I have spoken with no one about Okkas. It will be a joint decision. Tha player must take some medical tests first. We have some time off during that period so it is his choice what he does on his own time. The administration will be the ones to decide."

Grigoris Georgatos said: "The game was not easy; we turned it that way. The team is a bit disappointed due to the bad results we've had lately. We must get over it though and keep going. That's the only thing you can do in football, keep going no matter the good or bad results."

Haruna Babangida commented: "It was a wonderful game, although it was pretty tough as it came right up after our defeat from Valencia. It was only right for Rivaldo to be tha game's MVP. His cross to me was amazing. I am happy to be playing again after a long absence. I will be even better in the future."
