    Spikes back in Cincy?

Friday, March 2, 2007, 08:51 AM EST [General]

Profootballtalk.com first reported that the Bills are shopping linebacker Takeo Spikes.  And this makes sense with the emergence of Angelo Crowell.

One team to keep an eye on is the Cincinnati Bengals.  A return trip to Cincy for Spikes, in exchange for a draft pick, especially on the heels of dumping Brian Simmons, we hear is a possibility.

    Titans out of Clements bidding...

Friday, March 2, 2007, 08:40 AM EST [General]

Updating a previous nugget, Adam Caplan just called in (collect as usual) to tell us the Titans have bowed out of the Nate Clements bidding.

    Vincent expects quick deal...

Friday, March 2, 2007, 08:37 AM EST [General]

Safety Troy Vincent was just let go by the Washington Redskins.

He told us yesterday that he expects a deal to be done sooner than later and he's currently talking to 5 teams.  Vincent expects to sign a 1 or 2 year deal.

Vincent also said he doesn't believe that being the President of the Players Association will hurt him in getting a job, though he did acknowledge that some owners might be reluctant to have him on a team.

    Clements talking to SF...

Friday, March 2, 2007, 08:28 AM EST [General]

For the first time in, well, forever, the Niners have major cap space.  We are talking about 40 million dollars worth of flexibility.

Adam Caplan of Scout.com and Sirius NFL Radio reports that the Niners are targeting cornerback Nate Clements and are prepared to give him a substantial offer.

Clements is a game changer and the lock down cornerback would be a huge upgrade in the San Fran defensive backfield.  I've always viewed Clements as a star.  And for that matter, so has Chad Johnson.

The Titans and Browns will chase down the cornerback as well.

    Getting Wiggy with it...

Friday, March 2, 2007, 08:06 AM EST [General]

Do not be surprised if now former Vikings tight end Jermaine Wiggins gets some attention.  Wiggins has soft hands, has championship experience, and is a team leader.

In talking to Wiggins at length yesterday, he lists winning as his main priority here in free agency.

Wiggins said he didn't really fit in with Brad Childress' system in Minnesota.  He was frustrated in the passing attack.  He is excited to be free.

Expect to see teams like New Orleans, Cincinnati, and perhaps a return trip to Carolina in the cards.

Though he did get a bit crazy when he predicted his Red Sox would beat my Yankees in the AL East this year.

    Johnson still has it

Wiggins also told us that he still believes Brad Johnson can win football games.  Expect teams like Dallas, Denver, and maybe Carolina to want Johnson to be a mentor / backup QB.

    "Change of Scenery"

According to Wiggins, that exactly what Fred Smoot needs.

Wiggins told us, "Smoot can still play.  It wasn't working off the field.  There was a new system put in on the field.  He had an injury.  It just wasn't working in Minnesota.  But I'm telling you, Smoot can still play."

Washington, which wanted Dre Bly before he was traded to Denver, might just try to bring Smoot back to DC.
