We had a long chat with Giants coach Tom Coughlin on Tuesday.

Some nuggets ...

He absolutely loves Aaron Ross at the cornerback position and as a punt returner. Coughlin was thrilled to get his hands on a sure-handed, winning ball player in Steve Smith.

He expects Mathias Kiwanuka to be an impact 3 down linebacker on the strong side. 

This plan, according to Coughlin, was hatched in January.

And we asked Coach about the Giants interest in Keyshawn Johnson. Coughlin said, "Well, let's put it this way.  We study every player that's available and we'll do that again in light of the fact that Keyshawn is available.  We weren't necessarily thinking that he would be.  Of course we made a move in the draft to help solidify that position as well so we'll take a look at that like we do everything else but beyond that I really can't comment just yet."

Tom Coughlin's Jay Fund Foundation is preparing to host one of the premier charity golf events on Monday, May 7th at the Marsh Landing Country Club on the First Coast. 

A dinner and silent auction will be held on Sunday, May 6th.  . 

Bill Parcells, Jon Gruden, Bill Polian, Steve Spurrier, Sterling Sharpe, and Eli Manning are expected to attend.

Marty Hurney was very pleased with his 2007 NFL draft.

As he should be. He projects Jon Beason as an opening day starter.  Beason can play all over the linebacker position.

Hurney admitted he was nervous for the four picks in front of him in round 2 that someone would scoop up Jarrett.  He is rightly thrilled to get such a highly productive receiver.

Ryan Kalil is going to be a great offensive lineman in this league for a long time.  He gives them instant insurance against injuries.  Don't be surprised if Kalil cracks the starting lineup.

Johnson fits right in with the Panthers defensive ends and provides insurance if Mike Rucker isn't healthy.

And Ryne Robinson helps instantly on special teams.

Hurney also said that you shouldn't believe reports that Kris Jenkins is on his way out or that the relationship between the defensive tackle and the club is beyond repair.  Jenkins is coming in to speak with the brass this weekend and Hurney says Jenkins should be a Panther this season.

Six post-draft related nuggets to chew on...

1). Jared Zabransky told us that Houston showed interest in him during the draft process.  I bet he sticks with the Texans

2). Tim Ruskell and the Seahawks passed on a tight end a few times.  With that said, watch free agent pick up, big Joe Newton stick on the opening day roster.

3). The Browns will try to deal left tackle Kevin Shaffer now that Joe Thomas is on board.  The Giants would be an ideal fit.

4). I loved the Panthers selection of Tim Shaw, the Penn State backer, in round 5.

5). The Jets should hold onto both Justin McCareins and most especially Pete Kendall.

6). After passing on Brady Quinn, and that was a no brainer, Tony Romo is due for a large pay day in Dallas.

I've been writing forever that I wouldn't want Randy Moss on my football team.

And I know that Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are banking on themselves to turn Moss back into a Pro Bowl receiver and into a highly committed player for the first time in his life.

I'm not buying it.

Moss doesn't practice hard.  He doesn't play hard.  He dropped too many balls last year.  Moss has been injury prone over the last few years.  The receiver once walked off the field at the end of a Vikings game in week 17 against the Redskins before an on-sides kick.

The upside is Moss becomes a star again and the Patriots win the Super Bowl.  The downside is Moss wears out his welcome like he did in Minnesota and Oakland.  Color me skeptical.

Safety Brandon Meriweather had character issues as well.  But the former Miami star fits a major need in the defensive backfield.

You can count LaDainian Tomlinson as another person who believes that his understudy Michael Turner is ready for primetime.

In talking to the league MVP yesterday, LT said he thinks there is a very realistic chance that Turner is dealt.  He knows that the ball club can get a lot of value for his backup.  Tomlinson says selfishly he hopes Turner stays, as he was instrumental in keeping him fresh during his sensational 2006 campaign.

Tomlinson reports that Turner's speed, power, hands, and work ethic will make him a great player as an every down back.

Tomlinson says he is convinced that the team is moving in the right direction.  He thought it was paramount to re-sign guard Kris Dielman, who the star back called, 'an integral player and leader for the Chargers.'  He also likes the offensive system of new Norv Turner.  Plus, he raved about how Philip Rivers handled last season and can't wait to see him develop even more.
