Here at the Weird World of Sports, we've been waiting for just the right moment to weigh in on the Zinedine Zidane head-butt.
It's not that one of the world's top players coming completely unhinged during a key junction in the biggest sporting event on the planet wasn't odd enough on its own. Or that things didn't get stranger when the lip readers started coming forward with any number of interpretations of the insult that set off Zidane (on a personal note, I've been calling one of my co-workers a "dirty terrorist" whenever he does something to annoy me, which sadly has been all too frequent).
Then the guys on the Internet got involved ... and suddenly cyberspace was filled with games in which Zidane could run amok, head-butting everything in sight (if there is not yet a site in which Zidane can head-butt Osama bin Laden, just wait a little while longer; there will be) and doctored videos in which Zidane's tormentor, Italian defender Marco Materazzi bursts into flames. Sadly, decorum prevents us from linking to this piece of cinematic genius because Zidane performs, um, acts other than head-butting in the clip. And we'll leave it at that.
But we're glad we waited. Because at long last, we believe a story has emerged that represents a high point (or a low one, depending on your point of view) in the head-butt saga.
Three men have already penned what is all but certain to become a hit song -- entitled "Coup de Boule," the French translation for head-butt -- based on the incident.
