USC players Dwayne Jarrett and Thomas Herring were briefly detained by police Tuesday when they reportedly hitched a ride with a female driver whose car just happened to be under investigation by the LAPD.

According to Trojans head coach Pete Carroll, the players were released when police officers realized they were not involved.

"The lesson is don't take rides from strangers," Carroll said.

Later in the week, Carroll plans to cover not running with scissors and looking both ways before crossing the street.
