Letter to the National Basketball Association

Friday, December 12, 2008, 08:31 PM EST [General]

    Dear NBA,

I really enjoy watching NBA games, but there is a major problem with your league.  The NBA refs are there to make the game better and without them it would just be football on the hardwood.  But the problem with the refs is that they are terrible and can't make the right call.  Last years champions, the Boston Celtics are the team that benefit the most from the crooked reffing.  I have seen time and time again the Celtics get a cheap call that benefits them at the most crucial times.  The Celtics are off to their best start in franchise history, but it wouldn't be that way if the refs would stop betting on games.  The Celtics were trailing at home against the Hawks and Raptors, but the refs wouldn't accept that and they brought them all the way back.  Against the Pacers in Indiana, the Pacers were leading in the final minutes, but the refs sent the Celtics to the free throw line almost every trip down.  It's obvious that there is something wrong with the referees in the NBA.  And again against the New Orleans Hornets, the Hornets had a lead at halftime, but right from the start in the 3rd quarter the refs started helping the Celtics.  The Celtics went to the free throw line whenever they wanted.  On one play Paul Pierce was setting up the play and started driving towards the basket when Garnett ran in and hit his defender to the ground, then Pierce ran into a player and they called a foul on the Hornets.  It should have been an offensive foul, but instead Pierce got to go to the free throw line.  And then when Paul Pierce was at the line, he missed the second free throw and they called a lane violation so that he could get another chance and make it.  It was a terrible call.  And a couple minutes later the Hornets missed a shot, but Hilton Armstrong had inside position for the offensive rebound.  Glen "Cry Baby" Davis was behind him and jumped on his back to get the rebound while also grabbing his arm.  The refs didn't call an over the back foul, they instead called a foul on Hilton Armstrong because his arm was caught in between Cry Baby's arms.  There were many more terrible calls in the game, but there were too many for me to be able to remember and write them.  Even if I recorded the game and watched it while writing down every bad call, it would be too long of a blog for anyone to read.  I just ask that you please do something to fix the reffing which obviously needs major changing.

    Sincerely,

        A Disappointed Fan

    Overrated!

Tuesday, December 9, 2008, 10:33 PM EST [General]

In this blog I am going to list the things that I think are overrated.

Los Angeles Lakers: The Lakers started the season off playing defense, but once everyone thought they were going to be a defensive powerhouse, they went back to their old ways and lost some games because of it.

Boston Celtics: Is it possible for the 2 best teams in the NBA to be overrated? YES.  The Celtics actually play defense unlike the Lakers, but their offense isn't very good and they have needed the refs to bail them out of games that they would have lost otherwise.

Officials/ Referees: The refs in the NBA are TERRIBLE!!! David Stern says that they aren't betting on games, but it is obvious that they are.  They couldn't make the right call to save their lives.

Coaches: Everyone thinks that in order to win a championship you need to have a really good coach, but all you need is a decent coach that doesn't make a lot of stupid mistakes (Doc Rivers).  You don't need a hall of fame coach to win a championship (Phil Jackson), you just need a coach that isn't terrible like some coaches (Grizzlies, T'Wolves, Thunder coaches).

Huge Offseason Signings: Baron Davis went to the Clippers, Elton Brand went to the Sixers, and Corey Maggette went to the Warriors, but all those teams suck.  So those three teams wasted millions of dollars that they could have spent on LeBron or Wade or Bosh or anyone else that is a really good free agent in 2009 and 2010.

Watching the Lakers this season has made me respect the Boston Celtics because even though they are favored by the refs and are overly cocky and annoying, at least they try to play defense for all 48 minutes of the game.

Report Card: Lakers Road Trip - FAIL

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 08:20 PM EST [General]

The Lakers road trip can already be called a complete failure.  Even if they win the other two games by a combined 80 points, I will still be disappointed that they didn't win more.  They are on a 3-game road trip in which only 1 of the team they play has a chance at the playoffs.  The team they lost to tonight wasn't that team.  The Lakers proved that you need defense to win because they played no defense and lost to a crappy team.  They managed to let Marquis Daniels get a wide open layup in the final play of the game, but luckily he missed.  But then they didn't get the rebound, they let Troy Murphy tip it in and win the game at the buzzer, 118-117.  At this point I am going to say that the Referee-favorite Boston Celtics are the best team in the league.  With their amazing ability to get to the free throw line everytime they need a score and their ability to be able to play physical defense and tackle a guy without being called for a foul.  The Lakers need more defensive players.  Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum had a massive fear of the key tonight because they were never in it to play defense.  Kobe missed a wide open 5 footer that could have given them the lead, but he missed it...pretty badly too.  I still don't get how they could let the Pacers win that game when they went into the fourth quarter with a 15 point lead.  All I know is that they should have kept Odom in for that final possession.  Even though he isn't a big focuser in games, he was playing good defense at the end of the game.  And I have a feeling that he would have boxed out Murphy.  Bynum hadn't played in a couple minutes and obviously wasn't ready to play.  That game was painful to watch from the beginning because of the Lakers lack of defense.  During the second quarter I went outside to shoot some hoops because I was so frustrated with the Lakers so-called "defense".  All I can is that defense is the key to winning.
