    Cowher Power Outage

Monday, December 12, 2005, 11:26 PM EST [NFL]

I listen to alot of sports radio, especially local sports radio. And Pittsburgh Steeler fans, I would have to imagine, are the most unique brand of fans in the league. There can be no greater mix of knowing what you're talking about and complete and utter ignorance.

If the average Steeler fan had his or her way Bill Cowher would not have lasted past the 1998 season. He gets blamed for every Steeler loss that isn't obviously caused by Tommy Maddox, and I think someone once blamed him for the rise in gas prices. No matter how poorly the team played, or no matter how well the other team played, Steeler fans just assume that the Steelers are one or two coaching moves away from winning every game. That if Bill was a really good coach they could win every game 35-0. They're the real life version of the SNL "Da Bears" fans. I'm sure that this happens all over the country, but this season has brought the local trend to ridiculous levels. People really believed it was Cowher, and not the Colts, who caused the Steelers to lose their MNF game 2 weeks ago. That the most dominating team in 25 years would have just been powerless against an undermanned Steeler team had Cowher just removed his head from his butt. And when the Steelers win (which is alot more often than not) no credit is given to the coaching. Should the Steelers not make the playoffs this year, which is about a 40% chance of happening, the crows to replace him will grow louder. And should he have another bad season next year the Rooney family may have no other alternative than to fire Cowher, lest the unwashed masses storm Heinz Field with Terrible Towels and Terrific Torches.

Now granted Bill has never won a Super Bowl, and has only been to one in 14 years. But 95% of the teams in the NFL (and all sports in general) would give their mothers for their teams to have the success the Steelers have had in the 14 years Bill Cowher has been the head coach. So to my fellow Steeler fans I say, be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.

And to those in other regions, if I underestimate how crazy your fans get please let me know.
