I dunno if this is a common phenomenon, but check out a friend of mine's track record as a sports fan since I've known him.
I met Reginald (not his real name) our freshman year of college in 2000, at a tiny school in the northern WV panhandle that no one's ever heard of. He's from Michigan, and roots for all Detroit teams and Ohio State, not sure why about that one. Anyway, in the spring of 2000 Michigan State wins the men's basketball national championship, the next season they make it to the final 4.
In 2001 Reginald moves out to Arizona. Not only do the Arizona Diamondbacks come from literally nowhere to win the World Series, but his Ohio State Buckeyes come from out of even more of nowhere and win the college football National Championship IN ARIZONA. Yes technically the football game was in 2002, but 2001 season for all intents and purposes.
In 2002 the Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
In 2003 the Detroit Shock win the WNBA championship, so you see he's even good for sports no one cares about. Swin Cash grew up probably 5 miles from where I live so I feel a little bad about that one.
In 2004 the Detroit Pistons came from practically nowhere to win the NBA Championship. Not even 4 sure-fire Hall-of-Famers could stand up to his cosmic sports karma.
Also in 2004 my other friend Mike and I watched the NFL Draft at Reginald's house, after he had moved back to Michigan. Mike and I watch in utter amazement as Ben Roethlisberger, by all accounts the best QB in the draft, falls to our team at pick number 11. With guys like Reggie Williams, Dunta Robinson, and Kellen Knievel Jr going ahead of him. Karma by-proxy if you will.
And this year is the topper. Western Michigan University football team just this year completed the biggest turnaround in the history of the MAC conference, 0-8 the year before, 5-2 this year. I know this cuz the AP had an article about it in the Pittsburgh newspaper. Guess who enrolled at Western Michigan University just in time for football season this year? That's right, Frank Stallone.... I mean Reginald.
And this is only since I've known the guy. Before I met him off the top of my head there's the Fab 4, 2 more Stanley Cups for the Red Wings, a Final 4 for Ohio State basketball, the only time in the last 40 years the Lions have been any good, the Tigers won the World Series, and a Michigan national championship in football. Yes for an Ohio State fan that last one's really bad, but it's his fault for living so close to them.
So two questions for everyone: Is this a common thing? Is there always one lucky friend when it comes to sports? Especially in college where the rooting interests are always varied?
And how much is the right amount to bribe him to come live in Pittsburgh?
