About Me: Sometimes when I come to this site I am Tom7, and other times I am "Basketballogy-WasTom7" and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it. Sorry for the confusion. I like pretty much all sports, but to make time for the more important things in life, I have chosen to follow just one: basketball. I have more blog posts at Basketballogy.com.

NBA Reforms: A More Valuable MVP

Monday, December 4, 2006, 05:12 PM EST [MVP]

I've written before that I think singling out one player pretty much flies in the face of what is supposed to be a team game, but if you HAVE to do it, then I say do it more than once. Why not? Movies have more than one award system (Academy Awards, Golden Globes, AMAs, etc.), right? Let's give the MVP Award some company ... and some competition.Auerbach Award

The worst thing about the MVP selection process as it currently stands is that the media makes the selection, so the winning player is often someone closer to Miss Congeniality than Mr. Domination. So call their MVP award the "Media's Choice MVP Award."

Then let the coaches, who every day have to prepare a team to win against these players, announce each year the "Coaches' Auerback Award" winner.

Which of these two awards do YOU think the fans and players will regard higher? Yeah, me too.

And if you want, let the player's union vote for the "NBA Players' Association Player of the Year" award.

Three awards: one from the media, one from players, one from coaches.

    Why not?

It's not like the players would object, they want all the accolades they can get. It's not like the fans would hate it, then Nash and Kobe fans could potentially both have satisfaction. It's not like it would hurt marketing for the NBA, Nike, etc. to brag about their endorsers awards either.

Does this sound like a viable reform of the current MVP system?
