Samkon Gado: A feel good story, Coby DuBose
If you don't know the name, learn it. Samkon Gado is here to stay. The Packers' rookie running back has shown that he has exactly what it takes to excel on and off of the football field. Undrafted out of Liberty University, the humble ball carrier has captivated the interests of football fans and has gained recognition from the media as a player who goes about his business the right way.
Coming out of Liberty, Gado had no idea if he would be able to make it in the NFL. After being released by the Kansas City Chief's practice squad, his prospects looked dim. But when the Packers found themselves in a tight spot because of injuries at the position, Gado was there to step in. If ever there was an example for being in the right place at the right time, Gado would embody that pretense. After seven NFL games, six in which he saw the bulk of the carries, he has rushed for over 500 yards, leaving him 15th in the NFL and second behind only Cadilac Williams for the rookie rushing title. Even with all of his success, Gado has still found the ability to stay humble.
Those who knew Gado in high school could vouch for his relentless work ethic and for his unquestionable character. As someone who had the chance to play against him during his impressive senior year, I left the field not only impressed with his effort, but with his heart and attitude. Nevermind the fact that he ran for 260 yards against our touted defense, Gado left an impact by making an effort to encourage each of the guys on that field to continue working. After playing high school football for a school with under 300 students, it follows that Gado would be somewhat awestruck by his current circumstances. He marks his biggest thrill in the NFL as being able to "share a huddle with Brett Favre". After this weekend and Gado's 175 yard performance on Sunday Night Football, it is Favre who should be praising the running back. The fact that he has been called "one of the nicest young men we have ever met" by every analyst this season seems to mean more to Gado than any of his six touchdowns.
There is no question that the NFL needs more people like Samkon Gado. His work ethic and attitude are certainly a welcome change in pace in an NFL that seems to be heading more and more towards self-promotion and poor character. Here's to continued success for the Nigerian Bull. If you can't pull for this kid, then you need to seriously re-consider your priorities.
