So 2007 has seen Gordon go past Earnhardt Sr's number of wins, and now another Motorsport legend's figures will be shuffled back in the history books.
On June 11, Mark Skaife overtook the late Peter Brock's record of 37 round wins in the Australian V8 Supercar series. Eastern Creek was the site of his 38th win and was a memorable day for Holden fans, though there would have been many in the crowd who had hoped Brock's record would remain to honour his legacy.

'Peter Perfect' was Holden's favourite son, from the moment he stepped into the 'lion' brand to when he retired from a permanent drive after the 1997 season (with the Holden Dealer Racing team; HRT). During his time, he accumulated a (still) record nine victories on the famed Mt Panorama track at Bathurst along with three Championships (and was runnerup on five occasions).
But 'Skaifey' has won five Bathursts and five titles so the question will be asked if he is a better driver than Brock...just like the question whether Gordon is better than Earnhardt.
One can argue all day over which is the better driver and get absolutely nowhere so I'm not going to bother with that. Instead, I'll just give Skaife his due after a rather rocky start in his career.
1992 saw the final time a manufacturer other than a Holden or Ford win at Bathurst (a record that shall remain since they are the only makers racing in the series now). The red and white 'Winfield' Nissan Skyline GTR (dubbed the 'Godzilla' due to thumping the opposition in 1991 with its 4WD system amongst other things) won the most controversial race in recent memory. In apalling weather conditions, the GTR crashed just as the red flag came out to end the race. The crowd thought the car in second place had won, and therefore booed when the announcement came that it was the Nissan (co-driven by Skaife and Jim Richards) who would take home the trophy.
Same driver, same track...but in the '92 race, moments before crashing and the red flag coming out
Skaife has come a long way from that point, and even though all the Ford fans hate him, I would like to think that they appreciated what he achieved that day in June.
