    Premature Celebration?

Thursday, April 17, 2008, 03:48 PM EST [MLB]

Last night, with Felix Hernandez walking off the field after a complete game K fest against the A's, Mariner's fans were treated to what we thought this season was going to be all about: complete domination by our pitchers. But I'm not buying in just yet.

Remember last year's early run by King Felix? The one-hitter against Boston? Yea...then what happend? He got hurt. He's shown periods of awesome, with flashes of "Oh God!" through out his short major league career.

With Erik Bedard, the M's suppoused ace aquired this offseason, and J.J. Putz already on the shelf, the bullpen looking just laughable, and an offense that is clicking now but has been known to just, well, um, die, this year may be another long one. Do they have a shot to win the West? Hells yes! But they need to get after it now while the Angels are still out two AMAZING pitchers. They need to get their bats going, their pen together in such a way that the Nationals aren't looking at them and laughing, and they need their starters to be beasts, not whiney babies[I'm looking at you, Erik]. Hey...I hear Barry Bonds is still looking for a job...wonder how he'd like our waterfront?

    Slight Vindication for Sonics Nation

Tuesday, April 15, 2008, 03:20 PM EST [General]

Myself and thousands like me have been saying the same thing since July of 2006: Clay Bennett is a lying sack of crap! Now, that the emails detailing the plans by three members of the ownership group, Clay included, to move MY Seattle SuperSonics to Oklahoma and then blatantly lie to David Stern's face about have come out, the rest of you know it as well.

But Stern is still standing pat as he sinks into the pile of crap that he has backed himself into by supporting the outright theft of the franchise. Even with the evidence mounting that he's been led on, along with mostly everyone else outside of the Pacific Northwest, he still states that the move is a good idea.

Now, a slight beam of hope in the perpetual grey skys over Seattle...Howard Schultz, the inept owner who sold them in the first place, is calling bullshit, and it's about damn time someone did.

Schultz is suing Clay's group for your basic breach of contract because he didn't live up to the one year good faith clause that was there. Clay and Stern have got no legal leg to stand on. The news has gotten out, the support that they said didn't exist has been broadcasted load and clear, and there's even desention within the ranks with Mark Cuban and Larry Miller, owners of the Mavricks and Jazz respectively, coming out and saying that the move from Seattle is a dumb idea.

Clay tried to just take the team and then he resorted to bribing us with just taking the people but not the Sonics, leaving us the name, history, and colors. That won't fly. The Sonics are our team, we have a loyalty to them. Something you and your cronies, David Stern included, haven't got the slightest idea about.

Now, I wish there was a way to get people out there to aid our cause, but it may be to late with the Board of Goveners meeting coming this week. But, with Schultz stepping up the way he has and the continued media coverage, I hope this will be enough to finally show the NBA that while our team may suck and ownership has done everything imaginable to make fans stop caring, we are still here. Sonics Nation is alive and strong. Save Our Sonics!

    What's Wrong With College Sports

Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 03:30 PM EST [NCAA BB]

Last night saw an amazing end to another fantastic NCAA tourney. The upsets, the rising stars, the falling draft stocks, the crushed hopes. I love every second of it, even if my bracket was obliterated by Stephen Curry. The first Final Four to be straight chalk, though it wasn't an easy road for some. Three of the most storied programs and one that was arguably the best all season. Two dominent games to get to the title game. Then, a game that was an instant classic. A shot that will go down as one of the most clutch shots in tournament history. Kansas and Bill Self, after years of dashed dreams and criticism, finally make it to the top of the basketball world. They are the Champions.

But before he can even cut down the nets, there's already questions about whether or not he'll take the Okahoma State coaching postion, a job for his alma mater. As soon as he comes off the floor, microphones are in his face and people are asking about the Cowboys, not the Jayhawks. The Big 12, not the Big 10. Next year, not what just happened five minutes ago.

This is a trend that has been going on for years in college athletics, I understand that. It's still sickening. Les Miles was having to deal with constant questions about Michigan while still leading his LSU Tigers to the National Championship. He blew up on reporters, and I applauded him. I cannot understand why more coaches don't do just that.

I'm not saying that every coach needs to honor the contracts that they sign, though I think they should. I understand that at times there are jobs that you just can't say no to. But there should be some kind of grace period, especially after a title run. It's just ludacrous that coaches are being asked about openings at other schools as they are heading to the locker room after a win or at halftime.

College sports has gotten out of control. Have a little respect and let the kids and coaches revel in the fact that for right now, there is no one better then their team. Seriously...so much for the afterglow.

    What the Hell?:Frank Beamer

Thursday, March 20, 2008, 03:42 PM EST [NCAA FB]

Ok, so as of yesterday, the leading rusher for Virgina Tech was dismissed from the team. The reason? He had a bad attitude. Frank Beamer, the head coach at VT for going on 21 seasons, kicked a redshirt senior running back that always seemed to produce for his annemic offense because he "didn't have a relationship" with the guy? The hell? This guy made it through BOTH the Vick's and he kicks Brandon Ore off now? Good for him!

I'm not asking "What the hell?" because he did it, I'm asking why it took so long? This is the guy who dropped out of classes to work at a 7-11 storehouse back home. This is the guy who never really embraced what he had. A guy who, for lack of a better phrase, wasted his talent.

He kicked Marcus Vick off the team for multiple infractions and refusing to adhere to the guidelines set before him. Yes, he stuck with the Dolphins when Nick Saban was there, but that's because Saban and Beamer are a lot alike. They ask a lot from young men and expect them to stick to it. I hope Ore, with he's college career for all intents and purposes over, can find some kind of rudder and see that this is good for him. Maybe this motivates him to go out and work hard enough for an NFL team to take a Marcus Vick type of flyer on him. Maybe it forces him to focus on whatever is important in his life and stick to it rather then waffling like he seems to have done in the past.

    Honerable Mentions:

David Stern for calling the Seatlle arena push a PR stunt.

MLB for not clarifing the reimbursment that coaches and staff would recive for the upcoming trip to Japan for the Sox and A's.

The NCAA Selection Commitee for leaving Virgina Tech out of the field of 65. It took a last second miracle by the Heels to win that game. There were 64 better teams then the Hokies this year? Really?

    The Writing on the Wall

Friday, March 7, 2008, 09:54 PM EST [General]

I write this with the full knowledge that I'm probably going to get slammed: I LOVE the signing that the Seahawks have done! Anything is better then a running back that thinks he's playing baseball and slides to avoid contact and blocks (if we're lucky) like a scared grandmother about to be hit by a truck.

Julius Jones never got a fair shot outside of his rookie year because of Marion Barber, but look at the yards:

    • 2004: 819 yards, 4.2 YPA, 7 TDs in 8 games
    • 2005: 993 yards, 3.9 YPA, 5 TDs in 13 games
    • 2006: 1084 yards, 4.1 YPA, 4 TDs in 16 games
    • 2007: 588 yards, 3.6 YPA, 2 TDs in 16 games

Last year was when Barber really hit the scene (975 yards, 4.8 YPA, 10 TDs, and a Pro Bowl), but he's best two years were with Barber behind him, the numbers don't lie. While his YPA weren't through the roof, he still produced.

The running game in Seattle hasn't been the same since the Super Bowl run, but that's not all on Steve Hutchinson's departure. The loss of one or two guys on the offensive line does not constitute the drop off off a little over 1000 yards and 20 TDs that we saw Shaun go through in 2006. He never tried to get the tough yards and it was just made glaringly obvious by the mind numbing drop in stats.

    "Oh, he was hurt!"

    "Oh, his line sucks!"

ENOUGH! in 13 games last year, Shaun posted 716 yds, 3.5 YPA and 4 TDs. Maurice Morris, his back up and probably the first to go with all the signings this offseason, got 628 yds, 4.5 YPA, and 4 TDs in one more game. ONE MORE! BEHIND THE SAME DAMN LINE!

The writing is on the wall, especially if they get a back in the draft(Mike Hart will still be on the board at the end of the 2nd round). Shaun Alexander is out of town. Take your Twinkies and Bible and go somewhere else. I hear the Texans are looking for anothe fragile ex-Seahawk runner to compliment Ahman Green.
