Various reports tonight noted NY Islanders captain Bill Guerin was not in the lineup for tonight's Isles-Sabres game.
Chris Botta (former Isles VP of Media Relations) reports on his blog tonight the Isles have a "deal in principle" with an Eastern team for Guerin, which is expected to be finalized on Sunday. Guerin of course has agreed to waive his "no-movement" clause.
We can obviously rule out Toronto, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Atlanta as destinations. One would think he'd prefer to waive his clause to go to a legitimate contender. He's a right winger with a right-hand shot.
The Bruins? Possibly, but they seem more in need of a left handed shot down low on their powerplay. Devils? Rumor is Lou Lamoriello is interested more in a center or defenseman. Washington? Alexander Semin and Thomas Fleischmann appear to have the top two right wing roles locked up.
Flyers? They're very deep up front and appear to be seeking depth on the blueline. Montreal? Their need appears to be for a scoring center. Rangers? Would the Isles actually peddle Guerin to their rival despite being out of the playoff race? Sabres? They're already deep at right wing.
Florida and Carolina could use more depth at right wing, while the Penguins - despite their recent acquisition of Chris Kunitz - might want a more seasoned right winger for Sidney Crosby's line.
Let your imaginations run wild, rumor fans! I'm guessing it's Pittsburgh, Florida or Carolina.
**UPDATE** Botta cites a source close to this story ruling out Boston and New Jersey as destinations, while Botta expresses doubts about Florida.
**SECOND UPDATE** Kukla's Korner, citing RDS.ca and Newsday, report the potential destination could be the Washington Capitals for Guerin, but there's a problem in that the Caps are trying to free up the necessary cap space. The Washington Post however reports sources saying the Capitals aren't acquiring Guerin.
** Third Update, Sunday, March 1** According to Chris Botta the Islanders report no news today or tonight and could give no timeline on any future updates on this situation. Botta's suggesting the trade may have fallen through. Hopefully we'll find out more soon.
**FOURTH UPDATE, March 2**. Well folks it's starting to look as though whatever deal was originally supposed to go down either has fallen through, the Isles are considering other offers, or they're still waiting for the mystery team - believed to be the Capitals - to free up cap space to make this deal go down.
Guerin may or may not be dealt by the deadline but for now it seems this potential one may have grown cold.
