Thirty-five years ago this September, the greatest international series in hockey history took place when a group of Canadian NHL stars faced off against the elite players from the then-Soviet Union.
This year, starting August 27th and running until September 9th the best under-20 junior players from Canada and Russia will face off in their own eight game series.
As we NHL fans impatiently await the start of training camp and pre-season, this Super Series should provide a great way to warm up ourselves for the coming hockey season, as well as providing a look at some potential future stars of the NHL.
The series will be televised by TSN and Sportsnet, while RDS will provide French coverage of the entire series. Hopefully my American friends will be able to get the streaming video from one of these sites to enjoy this series, which begins in Russia with four games and the final four games in Canada.
Joe Pelletier, who runs the website 1972 Summit Series and Legends Of Hockey Network blog, has announced a spin-off blog, 1972SummitSeries.blogspot.com, which will also provide in-depth coverage of this year's Junior Super Series.
Joe's sites and blogs provide an entertaining and educational look back at hockey history that's every bit as good as anything you'll find at the Hockey Hall of Fame website (albeit not as glitzy) and I encourage all hockey fans to check out his work.
