Benny Parsons succumbed to lung cancer this morning.
Benny,
I thought I saw your face today.
In the sparkle of the morning sun.
And then I heard the angel say,
"Their work on earth is done."
Although Benny might be known to the newer NASCAR fans as only a commentator, I have seen the man race. In 1975 Benny won the Daytona 500 after giving his all. I was there and was impressed.
Although I was cheering on Dale at that race Benny definitely perked my interest.
Yes, we gripe and moan and groan about the commentators during the season ( myself included).
But when I heard the news today, tears immediately came to my eyes. I was surprised when the tears kept coming for that kind of emotion is usually reserved for family and friends.

I realized at that moment exactly how much I would miss Benny. You would think by this age I might have learned not to take anyone (ANYONE)..for granted...and although I have sent letters to Benny from July, when he announced that he had lung cancer, I am still deeply saddened to know that Benny won't be there next month for SpeedWeek..this will be the first year since the #3 hit the wall that I will be watching again and I was looking forward to hearing that familiar voice keeping me moving through the emptiness of my heart.

For those of you who do not know this: Benny won the 1973 Championship and was the winner of the Daytona 500 in 1975.
I will miss you Benny and I promise not to ever forget you. Whether it was in your moments of glory or the day to day NASCAR life, you never forgot the fans...you were always just yourself...and in the process you found a place in my heart.
You will keep your place there as does Dale, Davey, Adam, Bobby, and the rest of my "Asphalt Angels."
