Semper Fidelis. This is the motto I accepted April 6, 1998 when I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During my time of service I learned a lot of things about myself. For instance, it is possible to survive a six mile beach run on 2 hours of sleep and drunk. (I think being drunk actually added to the excitement) But what I really learned about was brotherhood. Being as close, if not closer, to someone who is not even related to you just because you are a part of the same organization. And if someone asked me today to choose I would take my Marine bretheren everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.
Which brings me to my sports take. Phil Garner had to make a choice, Roy Oswalt (2 time 20 game winner and one of his aces) and the other guy. Phil said his choice was based on stats but give me a break, it's freaking Roy Oswalt. People fault Ozzie Guillen for bringing his own team but you know what? He not only is sticking up for his team but he knows they are all-stars. Let me say that again for effect. HE KNOWS THEY ARE ALL STARS. Because in his demented latin eyes they are because that is his team. Now back to Garner. He chooses the "other guy" and later finds out Pedro is backing out, not because he's injured but he needs a break and this is a perfect time for him to get it. I know the papers say he's going on the DL but I'm telling you he's taking a break. So first thing Garner does is head over to his Ace.
"Hey Roy, how'd you lik to take a trip to Pittsburgh with me and Lance?"
"I'll think about it."
Before the decisions were made on the teams Roy had said he desperately wanted to go but now he wants to think about it. Sometimes Phil you need stick to your guns and go with your boys no matter what the numbers say. I don't like Ozzie Guillen's ethics or even moral-less actions but I love the fact that the Chicago White Sox are "his" team.
