The Semi-finals for the Serbian Cup were played today in Belgrade with some interesting end results.
In the first-semi final held earlier today saw 2nd Division side FK Zemun defeat 1st division side OFK Belgrade in a 5:4 penalty shoot-out after a 1:1 score during regular time. Zemun took the lead in the early stages of the match but OFK did manage to tie the score in the 51st minute. The game went the distance and it was on the 6th round of penalties that saw the Zemun keeper save OFK's Branko Lazarevic shot. The loss for OFK continues their struggles this season as they are cusp of relegration from the 1st Division (Superliga), while Zemun have some positives to look forward to considering they are a 2nd Division side (Prva Liga) who are also fighting relegation to the 2nd division. This is Zemun's first ever Serbian Cup.
The Other semi final was a thrilling battle between Red Star and Partizan in the Marakana where Partizan managed to win 2:3 after taking an early 0:2 lead thanks to both goals being scored by Diarra in the 13th and 22nd minutes. Partizan looked to be in control heading into the 2nd half, but their two goal lead disapeared when Red Star's Burzanovic would cut the lead in half in the 54th minute then Jestrovic would tie the match in the 67th. It looked as though Partizan would fall apart but held strong and managed to get the deciding goal in the 79th minute as Jovetic would give them the lead.
This will be Partizan's first Cup final since 2001, where they beat Red Star to win their 4th title (since the break-up of Yugoslavia). This is of course their first final with the country being called Serbia proper. With Partizan reaching the final and leading the league with only a few games left in the season will allow FK Zemun a place in Europe in the 1st Qualifying Stage of the UEFA Cup, pending proper registration through UEFA. Partizan are heavy favorites going into the Cup final in May and Grobaris (Partizan fans) will love nothing more than to cap of this season with the League and Cup trophies.
With Partizan's victory, the Cup final will be played in Red Star's Stadium, the first time in since 2001. this will also be the first time Red Star have failed to reach the Finals of the Cup since they missed out of the 1998 Cup final. From 1991, Red Star have won the Cup 10 times, losing 4 times in the finals. Partizan have 4 victories with 3 losses while FK Sartid and former club Zeleznik (who are now FK Vozdovac) each winning the cup once.
