Racers Race: Michigan Preview
Friday, June 16, 2006, 06:51 PM EST
[General]
Within every race, there are many separate races going on. Each driver has something, or someone to race against. In this section I will highlight a few races within this weeks race. The Racers Race. We're in Michigan this week for the Motown Showdown. The 3M Performance 400 is Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, a 2 mile tri-oval with multiple grooves and high speeds. Expect to see some three wide racing, and the ability to pass anywhere on the track. It's a race for bragging rights for the car manufacture big wigs, since we are racing in the heartland of the American car. Racers Race: Michigan 1. Bobby Labonte #43 - (starting position: 5th, bragging rights: Dodge) - Labonte has 3 wins, with an additional 6 top five finishes at Michigan. A total of 15 top ten finishes at this track makes Bobby Labonte a favorite amongst fans this weekend. He had a great race last week in Pocono till some late trouble. With an average finish this year of 22.2, Bobby may look like an underdog. But his average finish of 12.2 at Michigan International Speedway makes him a dark horse. 2. Dale Earnhardt Jr. #8 - (starting position: 6th, bragging rights: Chevrolet) - Dressed in his fathers day tribute paint scheme, expect to see and hear a ton about June-Bug during the 400 miles of Michigan. Although he is starting in 6th, history proves that might be as close has he will get to victory lane this Sunday. He has an average finish of 20.5 at the track, his best being 7th in 2003. After slipping 2 positions in the standings to 6th last week, Michigan may not look that inviting to the #8 team. With a 92-point lead over Jeff Burton in 7th place in the standings, there is really no need to panic. A top 15 finish would be a success. 3. Greg Biffle #16 - (starting position: 10th, bragging rights: Ford) - The Bif has raced six times on this track and has won twice. All the Roush Racers are the favorite in Motown; the owner has 8 wins at the track, leading all other current teams. Biffle is knocking on the door of the top ten in the standings, and I expect him to land there after Sunday. Probably at the expense of a second Hendrick Motorsports driver. 4. Jeff Gordon #24 - (starting position: 2nd, bragging rights: Chevrolet) - The good news is that the #24 car will be starting from outside of the pole. The bad news is Jeff Gordon will be driving the #24 car. Before all you Gordon fans rip into me, let's be fair. His season is at the breaking point, and this race is really important to his standings, chances for the chase, and reputation. He is struggling with the 1.5 to 2 mile tracks, (Rapid Roy can tell you why,) and is coming off the biggest wreck in his career last week. If he can capitalize on his starting position, he may get a jump on the momentum train that he is in desperate need of right now. 5. Matt Kenseth #17 - (starting position: 20th, bragging rights: Ford) - Kenseth is another big threat in the Roush Racing team to not only score well this weekend, but could likely bring home his second victory on this track. Amongst active drivers, he has the best average finish of 8.6 at Michigan. He has 9 top tens, in which 5 of them were within the top 5. In a season where Kenseth has shinned as one of the best drivers in the league, a top 5 finish is warranted. Honorable Mention - Kasey Kahne #9 - (starting position 1st, bragging rights: Dodge) - Add another pole position to Kasey's stats this year. A huge example of how far Evernham Motorsports has taken Dodge's return to NASCAR in 7 short years. Although Kasey has only raced this track 4 times in his NASCAR career, (he didn't fair well during his sophomore slump,) that is not a measuring stick to tell how well he will do this weekend. Winning two out of three races this year from the pole would have to make his chances good. Most Deserving Mention - Carl Long #37 - (starting position: DNQ) - I was rooting for you, Carl. R&J Racing would have been in the race this Sunday if we were qualifying on speed alone. A victim of the owner's points, #37, and a huge group of some of the most loyal fans in racing, are left watching this fathers day in Michigan. Let's Go Racing!

Bringing Down the House

And the Top Ten With It! In just 21 career starts in the Nextel Cup series, Denny Hamlin not only has his foot in the door, but he has key's to the house. The rookie class of 2006 has been fair, but Hamlin is poised as being in a class of his own. A contender, amongst proven veteran drivers within the chase. In the last 6 races, Hamlin's worst finish has been 11th. After winning the Bud Shootout in February, Hamlin has been streaky. But his hot streak started after he cut his hand running around the team hauler before Richmond. Denny Hamlin had the spotlight on him before the green flag dropped that Saturday night in his native state of Virginia, and he was still basking in it after an impressive second place finish that same night in Richmond. Ever since, he has been speeding fast into the top ten. After his win at Pocono this weekend, he landed there. What other word could there be to describe his race this Sunday, other then impressive? He started from the pole, after never racing the track before. Blew a tire, and spun out in turn two after leading 49 laps of 50, and fell to 40th place as a result. What was so impressive is that he never lost total control of the car while it was spinning, and managed to bring it into the pits with minimal damage. His crew was equally amazing, within a day of total pit chaos for most of the league, and got his car back running where they had it before the race started during 11 pit stops. By lap 104, he was back in front. After Gordon wrecked, the red flag came out, stopping the race for 13 minutes. After the restart, Hamlin had less then 6 laps to hold on to his first Cup victory. Denny Hamlin moved up in the league standings 2 spots to 9th place, and -463 points behind the league leader. Putting a second driver into the top ten for Joe Gibbs Racing. With a third place finish from Tony Stewart, the team looked great at the Pocono racetrack this weekend, and the future looks just as bright for the football coach's team. After the race, most every driver had good things to say about Denny Hamlin's rookie year thus far. Tony said it best ,when he noted that this will not be the last time we will see Denny Hamlin in victory lane this year.

Racers Race: Pocono Preview
Friday, June 9, 2006, 07:48 PM EST
[General]
Within every race, there are over 100 separate races going on. Each driver has something, or someone to race against. In this section I will highlight a few races within this weeks race. The Racers Race.
This week we race in Pocono. The triangle shaped track with fast straights, and dangerous turns. Three seperate turning angles, and three seperate banking degrees on each. Here is a look at what a few of the drivers have in store for them this Sunday.
Racers Race: Pocono
1. Denny Hamlin #11 - (Starting Position: 1st) - Within the last 5 races, Hamlin has 4 top ten finishes. The single race that he didn't get a top ten finish was last week in Dover. Where he finished 11th! Hamlin is a rookie, which means he has never raced at Pocono in a Cup car, or a Busch Series car. (The Busch series does not race at Pocono.) He claims his experience with the track is from his X-box. So, what are his chances? Carl Edwards was in the same position last year, when he raced the track for the first time, and finished with a win. Denny Hamlin just qualified with pole position, giving him another great chance to put his name in the chase. Rookie of the year, is starting to sound like an understatement.
2. Kurt Busch #2 - (Starting Position: 2nd) - He qualified for the outside of the pole. Here is what we know; the Penske team has not had a problem qualifying this year. Finishing, on the other hand? If the race were only two laps, both Busch and Newman would be within the top ten of the league. But qualifying doesn't bring the points, and both teammates have not made a decent enough run to pose any threat. Depending on where Kurt Busch finishes this weekend at Pocono will be the measuring stick on exactly what shape this Penske team is in.
3. Kasey Kahne #9 - (Starting Position: 3rd) - I'm getting sick of talking about how fast a car that Kasey has, but did I mention he has a fast car? He was within the top ten for speeds in the first cup practice, and qualified 3rd for the race on Sunday. Watch him finish the race within the top 5, and everyone will start talking about how he is one of the top three drivers in the league, and an extreme threat for the championship. Then, I will begin to say that I told you so.
4. Jeff Burton #31 - (Starting Position: 5th) - Burton has been on a strong streak, and on the verge of his first win in the cup series since 2001. Expect to see him racing within the top 15 all afternoon, and get a good portion of the spotlight as well. Jeff Burton is currently in 7th place in the standings, and keeping him there is the game plan. He has 15-1 odds for a win on Sunday in Pocono, and I expect him to finish right where he will be starting, within the top 5.
5. Carl Edwards #99 - (Starting Position: 40th) - Starting at the 40th position, Carl Edwards has a lot of work ahead of him at Pocono this weekend. He won this race last year, from starting at 29th. His only other race in Pocono he started 41st, and finished in 4th. He has a better chance then anyone else in making up 39 positions in 500 miles this weekend. In order for him to remain a contender for the chase, he needs to continue his luck at this track.
Honorable Mention - Tony Stewart #20 - (Starting Position: 18th) - No matter where he is driving, expect everyone to keep a close eye on Stewart and his condition of his injury. No doubt, it is going to be a long day of pain for the defending champ. But expect to see some of the other drivers cut him a bit of a break on the track this weekend, and expect to see Stewart racing for the lead at some point. Leading a few laps, with a top ten finish, and Tony the Tiger will remain in the headlines for the next week to come.

Chasing The Chase: Halfway
Wednesday, June 7, 2006, 06:49 PM EST
[General]
Chasing the Chase Since we hit the midway point to the chase; some driver's seasons are half over, some are in a desperate need of a change, some have used up all their luck, and some are the contenders. No matter which team, they are all 13 races into the season, with 13 races left till the chase. Get-Time! To chase for the cup with the additional last 10 races, you need to be part of a club. They take the top ten drivers of the league, or anyone within 400 points of the league leader, and reset the scores. Ten races to a championship, and the cup is the same distance away from all the driver's in the chase. The Contenders
Jimmy Johnson #48 - (Rank: 1st) - Let's face it, he is strong right now. 3 wins, and 7 top five finishes, Jimmy Johnson has held the rest of the league at bay for the whole season. The #48 team looks focused and in control of their own destiny. But destiny is the biggest problem JJ and his team has to face. He has a reputation of being strong at the beginning of the season, then falling flat as the season counts down. And crew chief Knaus, has already used up his cheat sheet in Daytona. No driver has a bigger spotlight on him more then Jimmy Johnson, and Knaus works better in the dark.
Matt Kenseth #17 - (Rank: 2nd, -74 points behind) - Strong and steady. It was looking like this last week in Dover; we should have seen Kenseth slip in the standings. He had wrecked 3 out of the last 4 races on the Monster Mile. But he dominated late, passing teammate Jamie McMurray with three laps left for the win. With 2 wins, and 9 top tens, he would be the league leader right now, if it weren't for the late race comeback from 42nd to 5th from Jimmy Johnson in Dover.
Tony Stewart #20 - (Rank: 5th, -293 points behind) - Last years defending champ, has been exactly that. Bad boy, turned Bad-Ass of NASCAR, has looked poised as the strongest veteran of the league. If he can hold off everyone through his injury, he is going to be the biggest threat for the championship, by reputation alone. I would have to put the Talladega race this year as the shinning example of just how focused Smoke has become. He raced well back from the leaders, avoiding all the reckless drivers, along with the big one, (the term for the multiple car crash that plagues restrictor plate racing,) and finished in 2nd. Where there is Smoke, there is fire, and Tony Stewart's fire has turned into his love for racing.

The Nascar Nextel Cup Series is heating up. Some drivers are feeling the heat more then others. Sound off on a few drivers I missed, or get in a word about some of them I mentioned above. Gentleman, start your engines. Let's Go Racing! Tags:
