    Fantasy impact: Manny suspended

Thursday, May 7, 2009, 12:57 PM EST [General]

Owners of Manny Ramirez should claim Juan Pierre to replace him in their lineups.

Available in more than three quarters (76.4 percent) of FOX Sports fantasy leagues, Pierre offers help in runs, stolen bases and average. Of course, the light-hitting outfielder has a big dropoff in homers and RBIs.

Ramirez is expected to return July 3, so keeping him on the roster as a bench player means he can still contribute later to fantasy teams with at least half the season remaining (83 games).

Pierre scored  at least 87 runs when he played full-time for seven seasons from 2001-07. He also reached 90 runs six times and 100 runs three times during that span. Even though he played only part-time last year, Pierre stole 40 bases to finish eighth in the majors. In the previous seven seasons, he averaged 54 steals. Pierre has the potential to hit .300. He owns a career .300 average and is batting .355 in 31 at-bats this season.

However, downgrade the trade values of all other Dodgers hitters, including Matt Kemp, Andre Either, Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson

Batting in the middle of the lineup, Kemp and Either will likely see fewer good pitches and RBI chances without him frequently being on base. At the top of the lineup, Furcal and Hudson will likely see fewer good pitches without Ramirez batting behind them and score less runs without Ramirez to help drive them home.

Another outfielder to claim is Kansas City's Jose Guillen, who's available in 51 percent of FOX Sports leagues. Like Ramirez, Guillen can contribute heavily in the four categories of average, runs, RBI and homers. Guillen had 23 homers, 99 RBI, 84 runs and a .290 average with Seattle in 2007.

The next season with Kansas City, his average dipped to .264 and runs fell to 66, but he hit 20 homers with 97 RBI in a weak-hitting lineup. This year, the Royals have upgraded their offense with the significant additions of first baseman Mike Jacobs and outfielder Coco Crisp. This bodes well for Guillen's stats this season.

    Salary Cap Baseball: Update

Monday, April 13, 2009, 04:42 PM EST [General]

Week 1 was a big success as I finished 32nd to place in the 99.6 percentile of the Salary Cap Baseball game.

For Week 3, I've updated Mark Reynolds' value from $9 to $8 to generate another $1 in the budget. I've replaced Khalil Greene at $11 for Stephen Drew at $12 for shortstop. Drew offers better all-around stats, has stronger numbers from last season and is a rising talent.

Salary Cap Baseball: Week 1 lineup

Friday, April 3, 2009, 10:58 PM EST [General]

Welcome to the FOXSports Salary Cap Baseball game!

Join on Facebook or MySpace to form a team.

Here's my advice on whom to pick at nine positions.

Atlanta, $1: This is one of the game's best bargains. The Braves have a solid top of the rotation with Derek Lowe, Javier Vazquez and Jair Jurrjens, along with promising Japanese import Kenshin Kawakami. They face Philadelphia on the road but start at home against the weak Nationals.

Home runs are the key category to achieve with five points awarded for each.

C: Victor Martinez, $12:  He could be fantasy's best hitting catcher if he returns to form. He's playing in the warmer climate of Texas and indoors at Toronto, and both have weak rotations.

1B: Miguel Cabrera, $17: He faces the shaky rotations of Toronto and Texas, and plays indoors in a four-game road trip against the Blue Jays.

2B: Ian Kinsler, $14: He's one of the few second basemen who can slug 20 homers in a season. He faces the largely unproven rotations of Cleveland and Detroit.

3B: Mark Reynolds, $9: He had a hot start last year, hitting seven homers in April. That accounted for a quarter of his 28 homers. He'll be playing in warmer Arizona at a hitter's park, facing Colorado's suspect starters to begin the season.

SS: Khalil Greene, $10: Playing at a weak hitting position, Greene hit 27 homers two years ago and is looking to revitalize his career in St. Louis. The Cards also play seven games at home in the opening week against the poor rotations of Pittsburgh and Houston.

OF1: Josh Hamilton, $14:  Rangers Ballpark is one of the top hitting parks, and Texas starts the season with three at home. Hamilton had 32 of his AL-leading 130 RBI in April last season.

OF2: Alfonso Soriano, $13: He hit 46 homers in 2006 and will be looking to start the season strong at a hitter's park in Houston.

OF3: Nelson Cruz, $10: He's one of the rising all-around hitters who showed much potential last season.

Captain, Cabrera: Detroit is scheduled to play seven games, weather permitting.

    Total: $100M

Other value picks: SP St. Louis, $4; SP Florida, $6; SS Troy Tulowtzki, $12; SS Stephen Drew, $12; OF Rick Ankiel, $11; OF Pat Burrell, $12; OF Jermaine Dye, $13
