    The Iverson Snub

Thursday, March 9, 2006, 02:56 PM EST [USA Basketball]

It is unbelievable that USA Basketball would turn a blind eye to one of the greatest basketball players of our generation: Allen Iverson. Here is a guy who carried the USA on his back in that embarrassing run in the 2004 Olympics. Where was Kobe? Oh he was too busy dealing with some chick he screwed on the road. Where was T-Mac? As much as I respect and like T-Mac, he didn't make it for "security concerns." Give me a freaking break. Where were Shaq, Big Ben, KG, and Vince Carter? Who knows...who cares? It doesn't matter why they weren't there the fact is, all the big stars had an excuse with the exception of Duncan and, the little-engine-that-won't-stop, Iverson. Oh Melo you didn't get enough playing time before and felt you had to voice your opinion about it? Welcome back to team USA. Paul "I won't pass" Pierce, sure come on in! How does the second leading scorer in the NBA, and certainly an icon of today's hoops generation, get passed over for this squad? Because he's the scapegoat. He's the big-time star that stood up when others wouldn't, or "couldn't," in 2004 and now he's the guy that has to carry the burden for their poor performance. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the biggest A.I. fan out there, but there is no question that he should be there representing his country. What I respect about him is the fact that he wants to be there even after all of the turmoil of the 2002 World Championships and the 2004 Olympics, he still wants to get out there and represent his country. The fact that Luke Ridnour gets an invite over a future hall of famer is just mindblowing. Unlike Shaq and KG and T-Mac who are just too busy being millionaires to worry about giving something back to this country (okay I'll let Shaq off the hook since he's been there before and his body is wearing down), Iverson is more than willing to don the USA uniform one more time to prove to the world that the best basketball players are red, white, and blue. USA Basketball's response: sit this one out little guy. Watch them fall flat on their faces again.
