Fantasy Football Crisis! Shaun Alexander Out

Monday, September 25, 2006, 05:17 PM EST [NFL]

If you're like me, then you had Shaun Alexander ranked number one and took him in the first spot of your NFL fantasy draft.  After all he is mr. consistent even though the media thinks he's soft.  I thought I got lucky when I was able to pick him up in my league especially since I missed my live draft.

So, this afternoon at around 5 o'clock I'm sitting outside of a department store in my car with my five year old daughter in the back seat.  The wife is shopping inside and I'm listening to sports radio when all of a sudden I hear, "Shaun Alexander may be out indefinitely with a broken foot.  Maurice Morris will be taking his spot possibly for the remainder of the year.  Now, in fantasy, the race to pick up Morris is on!"   Immediately my heart starts racing.  My team is hurting enough as it is now I've lost Alexander!  So, I'm sitting there thumping the steering wheel and chewing my fingernails and the only thing running through my mind is, "Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God."  We take our fantasy sports seriously in our league and now I'm thinking, "I can't believe it.  How old is this news?  Did this come out first thing this morning? I've got to get Morris."   So, I sit there patiently waiting glancing back and forth at the store entrance as if that's going to make my wife come out any faster.

"I can wait," I say to myself, "She'll be out in a minute and then we'll just go home and I'll jump on and take care of it."

Another minute passes and she still hasn't come out.  I pick up the cell phone and ring her up.

"Uhm...I'm not trying to rush you at all but...uhm...do you think you're going to be in there for a while or are you almost done?"

She replies, "I'm just trying on some things right now but I'm almost done.  Maybe five minutes or so."

Every married man knows that this translates into at least 15 minutes...maybe 20.  "Okay, well...I've got to run to the house for a minute so take your time."

"You've got to run to the house?" We live right around the corner from the store (thank God), "What for?"

"Nothing...I've just got to do something real quick," I mumble. "I'll be right back."

So, I fly out of the parking lot racing to get home to the computer.  The entire time my palms are sweating and I'm thinking of how I'll be watching the guys in the playoffs instead of joining them there at season's end.  I whip into the driveway and run in.  I open up my league page and check the recent transactions. "Yes!" I yell aloud as I breathe a sigh of relief.  So I get in, bench Alexander, and pick up Morris.  Alive for another week but it was a close one.

So, if you picked up Alexander in your fantasy league, probably a good idea to pick up Morris.  Don't expect him to put up Alexanderesque numbers, but something is better than nothing right?
