Now that Separation Saturday has come and gone, and we're into the fourth week of the season, the big picture of college football begins to open up. Now, we get an idea of what teams are for real and what teams were overrated. With that said, heading into week 4 I present my own Top 10.
1. Auburn - The Tigers won against a top 10 team in LSU with what was labeled a controversial pass interference non--call. The SEC came out and said that the call was the correct one. Don't get me wrong, being from Alabama I'm a Crimson Tide fan, but give credit where credit is due. Auburn is solid from top to bottom and if they run the table this year and get robbed again it will be a true travesty.
2. Ohio State - The Big Ten is second only to the SEC in my opinion and Ohio State is the cream of the Big Ten crop. They went into Texas and beat the Longhorns on their home turf, Troy Smith is probably the best quarterback in college football right now. The Buckeyes have only one thing standing in their way to getting to the national championship game-- the Wolverines.
3. Michigan - Michigan goes into Notre Dame, the number 2 team in the nation, and totally destroys them. How does that happen? Is Notre Dame overrated? Probably, but the more likely answer is that Michigan is just that good. Coming into the season, the Wolverines were ranked, as usual, but now they're on everyone's watch list. Can they keep it up?
4. USC - Despite what ESPN radio announcers may have you believe, the Pac 10 is horrible. I'd say that it's probably the third worst conference in college football. Its only shining star? The USC Trojans. They are good and they will only get better. They know that their conference is weak which is why they scheduled Arkansas, Nebraska, and Notre Dame. The real question then becomes, if three teams run the table does USC deserve one of those two precious spots in the national title game?
5. Florida - The Gators may very well be the second toughest team in the SEC. Although some may argue that they only beat the Vols by 1 point last week, it still stands that they are a great football team. Urban Meyer has brought an unusual offensive scheme to the league and his players are responding. Next to Notre Dame, no one has a harder schedule than the Gators with games coming up against Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and a tough non-coference game against Florida State.
6. West Virginia - The Big East is a joke of a conference and everyone knows that, but West Virginia is a solid football team. They will likely run the table and be left out of the national title game in January. Why? Their conference schedule is laughable and the only thing funnier is their non-conference schedule against teams like Eastern Washington, Miss. State, and Marshall. Their only truly tough game will come against Louisville.
7. Louisville - Louisville is another team that has the potential to run the table having already taken down the Hurricanes, their only tough game left comes against West Virginia. The winner of that game will likely decide which of them gets to be pounded on by an SEC team in the Sugar Bowl.
8. Georgia - The Bulldogs are tough every year. They have become a powerhouse in SEC football but always seem to just fall shy of going over the hump. Of all the SEC teams out there, one has to wonder if Georgia deserves this high of a ranking. Yes, the conference schedule is brutal but Georgia hasn't beaten anyone respectable yet having their first three wins against Western Kentucky, South Carolina, and UAB. Saturday they will take on Colorado in what was supposed to be a good matchup between the SEC and Big 12 and a way for Georgia to strengthen their schedule. Sadly that won't be the case this year because Colorado is horrible. I think before it's all over, the Bulldogs will lose their two key road games against Florida and Auburn and will, yet again, just fall shy of going over that elusive hump.
9. Virginia Tech - The ACC used to be a joke of a conference. Then came Virginia Tech, Miami, and BC. Now, all of a sudden they're not that bad. Virginia Tech is 3-0 now, but they haven't played anyone yet having wins against Northeastern (that's right...not Northwestern...it's Northeastern), North Carolina, and Duke. Good confidence building games and they're going to need that confidence with games coming up against BC, Miami, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. At least they didn't schedule the Seminoles this year.
10. LSU - The only team in my top 10 with a loss. LSU is good...really good. Don't be fooled by that Auburn game. LSU is solid in all aspects. They have an experienced quarterback, a decent run game, and a great defense. The fact that the only touchdown they allowed against Auburn came off of a quarterback sneak at the 1 should tell you that because Auburn's offense would shred most any defense out there. I think LSU will win out the rest of their games but won't play in the SEC championship game.
