Does Rutgers Deserve a Title Shot if They Win Out?

Friday, November 10, 2006, 10:09 AM EST [BCS]

Well, after coming back from an 18 point deficit to the number three team in the country, the BCS must listen to the argument for Rutgers.  Let's look at this scenario shall we? If Louisville had've won out and went undefeated, the BCS would have put them in the national title game over a one loss Florida, USC, or Notre Dame right?  I've even heard certain radio announcers claiming that they would deserve a shot because they "tried" to schedule a tough opponent in Miami this year.  That's about as lame an argument as you can make.  The fact is, the media and the BCS were prepared to hand this pathetic Louisville football team the keys to the kingdom if they ran the table.  Rutgers on the other hand, well, "they're a good story but we can't possibly put them in the title game."  I say why not?  After all they'd be willing to put in Louisville who plays in the same scrub Big East conference and plays the same opponents as Rutgers, but if the Scarlet Knights do it, well, we can't seriously consider them.  The fact is, if Rutgers wins out, they would have beaten both Louisville and West Virginia, both teams that the media and BCS would be willing to put in the title game if they had've ran the table.

I'm not saying that Rutgers is as good as Florida, USC, or Notre Dame.  I think we all know that they wouldn't stand a chance against a real football team.  I like them, they're a feel good story, but even if they ran the table they wouldn't deserve a shot at the national title and neither would Louisville or West Virginia.  But if the media is so willing to give either Louisville or West Virginia a shot in the title game why can't Rutgers be considered?  The Scarlet Knights have December 2nd circled on their calendar and if they beat the Mountaineers and go undefeated, under the current system, they would earn a title shot.  But that won't happen.  At the end of the day, when all is said and done, they won't get a shot, undefeated or not, because the BCS doesn't work.  It's a broken formula and everyone knows it.  Mark my words, if the Fighting Irish win out the rest of the way, they'll be playing either Ohio State or Michigan in the title game.  After all, who's going to bring in more cha-ching the Rutgers Scarlet Knights or the golden domes and isn't that what it's all about anyway?
