    Buffalo, NY: a Jinxed City

Monday, May 15, 2006, 06:46 AM EST [NHL]

And one that deserves a championship team like no other. Buffalo is a smaller market franchise city, so they don't have the finanacial pull to draw in lots of talent. Buffalo is known for its long, cold, harsh winters with howling lake effect snows that pile up drift upon drift. Indeed, I remember one summer back in the mid-70's when I do believe they still had a snowbank or two on the 4th of July. And if that's not enough, they usually play in pretty tough leagues against staunch and fierce competitors from New England, New York, Philadelphia and even Miami. But one thing Buffalo fans have that other cities cannot claim, as much, is loyal fans. I don't care if a Buffalo team has the worst record in the league, Buffalo fans will stay true to their team. Now, I have lived in Boston, Philadelphia, the Baltimore-Washington area and Florida and more fickle fans never walked the face of the planet. If one of their teams is tanking, their fans will turn on them faster than a three-day old chili dog washed down with a warm Heineken. On the other hand, Buffalo fans are true-blue. I have driven up Rte. 219 from Olean to Jamestown to East Aurora and beyond when the Bills and Sabres were taking it on the chin and you still could see whole garages painted with a Bills or Sabres logo. Some will argue that Buffalo won four AFC Championships with Jim Kelly and company, and two AFL titles in '64-'65. True, but they haven't won a modern-day championship outright. No Super Bowl trophies, no Stanley Cup, they don't have an MLB team, although they do havea minor league ball club, which has met with some successes in the championship realm. But no major sports franchise has won a championship since those famed teams from '64-'65; that's 41 years without a championship. And Buffalo has produced some great players over the years, all deserving of a championship ring. Folks know about the famous Bills players, but how about some of the old Buffalo Braves players from the ABA? Bob McAdoo, Adrian Dantley, Ernie DiGregorio to name a few. And how aboiut the Sabres players from those 70's teams? Gil Perreault, Craig Ramsey, Rick Dudley, Jim Shoenfeld, Rene Robert and a whole host of others who are extremely deserving of wearing a ring. http://msn.foxsports.com/id/5657604_4_1.jpg Yes, Buffalo will always revere their sports teams, even if the rest of the world doesn't. Buffalo is a proud city; proud of their wings, proud of their snow and proud of their sports teams. They deserve a championship just as much, if not more than the cities with deeper pockets and bigger markets. Ftae will decide the ending this year, but until that happens....go Sabres!
