Gordon Might Be a Spectator This Year, Too

Monday, June 5, 2006, 06:54 AM EST [NASCAR Visa Expert Analysis]

I was almost excited yesterday, as JG actually got to lead more than a few laps around Dover. I was also happy to see that my "Top Ten Things About a NASCAR Race" wasn't far off the mark, either (I just keep waiting for Kurt Busch's ears to pop back around and take out a reporter and a couple of cameramen). But, true to form, he started sliding backwards toward the end and then appeared to drift off to some savannah, chasing after lions and giraffes, again. Maybe he thought he was supposed to be admiring the tiger on Kyle Busch's car, who knows? Jeff Gordon needs a wakeup call and fast. He is less than 100 points away from being a spectator again this year and a few more beyond that, from being the recipient of the million dollar consolation prize (11th place). Steve Letarte needs to sit JG down and ask him, flat out, if he wants to win a championship, or go deep-sea fishing somewhere down in the Gulf, because he seems to be the one who is making all the sacrifices, while Jeff is out vacationing all the time and having a ball. Jeff, if you read these things, which I assume you don't, from your interviews and your busy schedule, you better up the ante, bud. You're a four-time, Nextel Cup champion; so, what! What have you done for us, lately? You waited way too long to can Robbie Loomis, when it was so apparent to everybody else that his heart wasn't in it, and now that you have a guy who wants to race hard, you don't seem to have your head in the game. So, what gives? I hope that, at the very least, somebody affiliated with Jeff Gordon reads this and has a little chat with Mr. Champ. Look at it this way, folks, I might be just one person, but if you consider that I represent the same feelings and sentiments as 1,000 other people, and each of them represents roughly the same, then there are a lot of JG fans out there who are in agreement that Jeff needs to get his head back in the game quickly, or the rest of us are going to be rooting for somebody else in the Chase, and maybe even beyond. PS - Aside to Mr. France - FX is NOT mainstream. There are still a LOT of people who do not have a subscription to FX and chose to either forego the race yesterday, or listen on MRN instead. It still just floors me that you would give the All-Star Challenge to FX, as well. Alienation at its finest!
