    Novel Approach

Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 06:15 AM EST [MLB]

Last night Russ Springer, of the Houston Astros, plunked Barry Bonds on the hand and the right shoulder (off legitimate pitches, I might add), and was ejected from the game. To a standing ovation from the Houston crowd. Hmmm...what a novel approach! Slightly unethical, but maybe a new twist on the whole Bonds, Ruth thing? Just keep plunking him every time he gets up to bat and one of two things is going to happen; (a) he gets plunked in that big head of his and finally relalizes that maybe this wasn't such a smart idea after all, grows a guilty conscience and steps away from baseball forever, or (b) he gets plunked on a part of his body where he can never recover his swing from and is forced to retire from baseball. Either way its a win-win for fans, players and baseball. Russ Springer may have just saved baseball last night. He may have been ejected for the game, but we'll see what happens when the jury get s back. Meanwhile, it should be interesting in Houston tonight.
