Well, Kris Benson was finally traded last night, as was Coco Crisp (pliminary trade, should be offical by Monday). So, I'm gonna breakdown both trades and see whos the winner and loser in each trade. Also, a grade will be given (in smiley faces
). Here's the grading scale:
= Bad for team
= Not bad, but not good

= Okay for team

= Very good for team

= Great trade!
P Kris Benson (NYM) for Ps Jorge Julio and John Maine (BAL)
FOR THE METS:

FOR THE ORIOLES:

THE GOOD: With the addition of Billy Wagner, the Mets were looking for a setup man. Aaron Heilman would be a good for that role, but he made it clear he wants to start. The Mets signed a Japanesse import for a role in the pen (who will try to be a 5th starter) and traded for Duaner Sanchez to setup for Wagner. Now, though, the Mets have a former closer to setup for one of the best closers of all-time. They also save about $7.5 million in this trade. They also add a very good looking starter that will be in the rotation, come 2007 (my predicition). Now, they can move Heilman back to the rotation, if he wins the job out of Spring Training (which he most likely will).
THE BAD: Kris Benson is at the top of his prime, and by going to the Orioles to work with Leo Mazzone, the Mets could look stupid in this trade. Benson could end up becoming a top notch starter. Another bad would that the O's have given up another closer, got rid of a future starter and are depleting their pen. That will make Miguel Tejada happy.
THE UGLY: Corey Patterson. Patterson's gonna be huge in Baltimore! Oh, sorry, I was dreaming. Patterson was crap in Chicago because he finally realized he sucked. He won't amount to anything anywhere. His first few years were flukes, as he was introduced to the Majors, his numbers were skewed. Don't expect much from Patterson.
OF Coco Crisp (CLE) for P Guillermo Mota and 3B Andy Marte (BOS); BOS signs SS Alex Gonzalez

FOR THE INDIANS:

FOR THE RED SOX:

THE GOOD: The Indians trade off a VERY good player in Crisp, but oh my god! First, they add a very good setup man for Bob "Sticky" Wickman, along with Arthur Rhodes. Second, they get Andy Marte to play 3B. Marte's bat is huge, and would be a good replacement for Aaron Boone. However, Boone is a free agent after this year. So, the Indians could put Marte at AAA (after him having a huge Spring Training) and have him start at 3B in 2007. The Red Sox add the CF they've needed and a leadoff man, in the same player! What a deal! Then they add the shortstop they've needed since trading away Edgar Renteria (why?) for Marte, in Gonzalez.
THE BAD: The Red Sox give up a quality setup man in Mota, have no 3B slated for the 2008 season (Lowell is gone after 2007). They also get Gonzalez, who is having some shoulder issues (like Josh Beckett), who will more than likely be their opening day starting shortstop. There are no bads with the Indians. It's all good in the hood.
THE UGLY: Kevin Youkillis. Youkillis (which sounds like a murderer) is slated as the opening day 1B. He has no huge power, a low average hitter, and not a fast runner. The 'not a fast runner' part fits in with the team, but the others do not. They have JT Snow, but as a defenseive replacement. So, the Red Sox are hurting in the 1B category.
***NOTICE: This trade was leaked! It may not happen. However, there are reports saying that Arthur Rhodes will be sent to Philly for Jason Michaels, and David Riske and Josh Bard will be heading to Boston with Crisp for Mota, Marte, and a minor league catcher***
So, that's it for today's Sunday Shakedown. Check out SS Feb. 12 - Feb. 25 for my predictions on how each team will finish in their respective divisions. Also, on Feb. 18 and 25 (when I predict the Wild Cards), I will also have my playoff trees for the respective leagues. On Feb. 25, I will announce who I think will win the World Series. Later.
