With all the hoopla surronding RBs Reggie Bush, DeAngelo Williams, Laurence Maroney and LenDale White it is obvious this draft class may be the "Draft of the Running Back". But lost in all of the talk is a fullback. No, this is not your traditional block first, run second, this fullback could get you to think he is a halfback. Meet Brian Leonard, FB for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
The past two years, Leonard has been under-the-radar and unknown to most of the college football year until the past two games. Leonard, a 4th-year junior, has performed the "Leonard Leap" many times and still remains one of the most dangerous backs in all of college. But coming from Rutgers instead of say, Texas or USC, must hurt Leonard's professional aspirations. Leonard along with freshman RB Raymell Rice, has provided arguably, the most dangerous backfield in the Big East.
Leonard's stats this year have been unbelievable for a fullback. In rushing yards he is ranked 7th in the Big East with 740 yards and 4th in rushing TDs with 11 TDs. Receiving-wise, Leonard is proving his durability and versatility to interested NFL teams. He has 55 receptions (2nd in Big East) which is more than NFL prospect, Pittsburgh's Greg Lee. He is tied for second with 7 receiving TDs this year. Leonard may need to sharpen his blocking ability but still deserves respect and should be the best FB in this draft (or next year's) with only token competition from Wisconsin FB Matt Bernstein and Notre Dame's blocking specialist Rashon Powers-Neal.
Dear World,
With his performance in the Insight Bowl, please give Mr. Brian Leonard the respect and notoriety he deserves.
