    Would Bush help Houston?

Wednesday, December 14, 2005, 04:24 PM EST [General]

Across the country, most "experts" believe that the Houston Texans are actually throwing football games to get the chance at drafting USC RB Reggie Bush.  Bush, if you have been in a cave for the past 3 months, is the most exciting player in all of College Football and now has a Heisman Trophy to his resume.  Bush, a junior, has recieved comparisions to the likes of Gale Sayers, Tony Dorsett and even LT (LaDainian Tomlinson).  I understand that Bush is a talent that you only see every decade or so but if Houston is throwing the games (which I don't think they are) will Bush ultimately help him.  Here are 5 reasons why he won't.

    1.  Domanick Davis-Houston has a running back named Domanick Davis, with all this hoopla surronding Bush, you may have forgotten.  While Davis is not a Tomlinson or Shaun Alexander, Davis is adequate enough to start for most teams in the league.  Currently has 976 rushing yards and has missed two games so far this year.  What would happen if he started this two games?  Possibly a 1,100+ yard season only about 100 yards behind Tomlinson.  Also, Davis is the most versatile player on Houston with 39 receptions so far (3rd most on Houston).  Why draft another running back when you have a pretty solid one so far?

    2.  Pressing Issues-Ok, Houston is the worst team in the NFL by far.  With David Carr being sacked at record setting pace, year in and year out, why not go after a tackle such as D'Brickashaw Ferguson out of Virginia or even USC QB Matt Leinart?  If you just have a running game, teams will stock up against the run and make you throw and by playing Jacksonville and Indy two times a year, the passing game is vital.  With the Texans D beyond suspect, you are going to need to throw the ball to win.

    3.  Eligibility-Ok, in the coming months this will be a non-issue as Bush will decide whether to declare or not to declare.  If in the world of crazy, Bush will not to declare and Houston will wind up taking Ferguson.  If Bush doesn't declare that leads to.....

    4.  Fans-The only possible reason that Houston is even being followed on national sports programs is because their record and their "persuit" of Bush.  If Bush would not declare, fans would be outraged and as much as their O-Line will be improved their record would not improve too much and fans would not be as excited as over Ferguson than they would be over Bush.

    5.  Wins/Losses:  If Bush becomes a Texan, he would make an impact but like I said before they have a solid RB but what would happen if they won 2 games next year with Bush and he runs for 900 yards?  They would have to go after a QB and with no recievers after Andre Johnson, this franchise could be dreadful for a long time.

I am not saying Bush is not a good fit for Houston but would he make the difference to get the team back to respectability they had last year.  Ok, maybe not RESPECTABILITY but at least teams did not take them for granted.  They are in a tough division with Indy and Jacksonville meaning they need to find their footing and fast or the NFL could regret not giving this franchise to LA instead.

This article was rushed a bit so excuse small grammatical errors.

Life & Sports Often Butt Heads

Tuesday, December 13, 2005, 03:43 PM EST [General]

While watching Jiri Fischer's tearful press conference this week, it really brings most things in prespective.  Here is a young, 20-something athlete with the talent to succeed in the NHL and then a stroke comes and dashes all of his dreams in the blink of an eye.  Tedy Bruschi had everything going for him, 3 Super Bowl rings, a Pro-Bowler and was one of the more recognizable LBers in the league.  Then soon after celebrating the Super Bowl, Bruschi suffered a stroke due to a small hole in his heart.  Bruschi fought back and has now returned to the field but you have to imagine that the Patriots are still watching him extensively.

When you watch a sport of any time, I know this may sound stupid, but you look at these guys as immortal.  That they can't be stopped, they can't feel pain and then you see a guy like Fischer go down and you just stop and you just stop and think to yourself that life always comes before sports.  From Joe Theismann's knee snap to Napoleon McCallum's dislocated knee to even Dale Earnhardt's last-lap fatal crash in the Daytona 500, careers and in Earnhardt's case, life, go before sport.

I have a story to tell, my grandma is living with us and is recovering from hip surgery.  Obviously her bones are weak and the slightest fall could produce another hip problem.  On Sunday, I was watching the Colts/Jaguars game and I am a diehard fan.  It was the fourth quarter and the Jags were in the red zone.  My mom called my name and I said "Let me just see this play".  After Garrard fumbled the ball, I walked to see what my mom wanted and I saw my grandma getting up off the floor, she had fallen.  Fortunately she was just a bit bruised up, nothing major, but it really made me feel horrible about myself.  I delayed helping my grandma so I could watch a game that had no personal effect on my life.

It may seem cheesy but this just puts everything in perspective.

    Edge=More Valuable than Peyton?

Monday, December 12, 2005, 06:59 PM EST [General]

What do Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison have in common?  Well they are all on the Colts and part of one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history.  But some question how valuable they Edge and Peyton really.  Let's take a look those 2 players.

Peyton Manning was immediately appointed starting QB of the Colts after being drafted #1 out of Tennessee in the 1998 draft.  After his first two years on the job, Manning had his team from pretender to contender.  While dropping his TD/INT rate lower and lower, Manning started to become well-known for his "gyrations" as the Colts reach the line of scrimmage.  Now fast-forward, 2 MVPs and a 49-TD season, Manning is know arguably one of the best QBs of our time.  What would happen to the Colts if Manning were to go down (knock on wood)?  Well welcome backup Jim Sorgi into the unforgiving world of the NFL.  Sorgi was a 6th-round draft pick last year after a successful 1-year start at Wisconsin after replacing Brooks Bollinger.  Sorgi has played extensively in 1 game against the Denver Broncos and threw for 175 yards and 1 TD.  Sorgi is a good backup but throw him in the fire and he will burn.

Edgerrin James was drafted out of Miami in the 1999 draft as the heir apparent to Marshall Faulk.  James has lead the league in rushing and yards from scrimmage multiple times and is one of the Top-5 running backs in the league.  But James is in the midst of his prime and with his ability to pound the ball, the Colts have a physical part of the offense nailed and after reconstructive surgery on his knee in 2000, James has been one of the top rushers in the past 3 seasons.  But who is his backup?  Enter Dominic Rhodes, an undrafted free agent who already has a 1,000 yard season in his pocket.  When Edge went down Rhodes filled in admirably but can he pound the ball?  No, but he is a great outside runner and deserves a starting spot somewhere else.

So, who is more valuable?  If Peyton went down, do you think he would shy away?  Of course not, he would grab the headphones and tell Sorgi what he needs to do.  Edge, who is most likely gone after this year would hurt the Colts offense too severly and unless the Colts grab DeAngelo Williams out of Memphis, there are no real replacements in this draft class (realistically).
