Stupid is as Stupid Does, Phillies-Style

Monday, June 26, 2006, 05:58 PM EST [Philadelphia Phillies]

In the movie "Forest Gump", the title character is told by his mother, "Stupid is as stupid does."

So, it's not difficult to imagine what Mama Gump would think of Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher Brett Myers, given that Myers spent part of this past Friday in jail.  The Big House.  The Iron Bar Hotel.

And why was Myers in the slammer?

Apparently, he made the incredibly stupid decision to strike his wife in the face.  In fact, Myers apparently did so, on a public street in Boston in front of several witnesses early Friday morning.  Of course, domestic violence is clearly wrong for a number of reasons.  However, the fact that Myers seemed not to have any qualms about committing such an act in such a public manner is even more disturbing.

And Brett Myers is 6-foot-4, 240 pounds.  His wife, I am guessing, is not.

Of course, the Phillies' company line was not to say much of anything, and being in any way critical of the team's star pitcher hitting his wife in the face seemed not to be on the agenda.

Philadelphia GM Pat Gillick said, "He's been our best pitcher and I think that it's in the best interests of the club that he does pitch."

Ok, Pat, good to know what the club's best interests are in this situation and that somehow quality starts measure higher on that scale than taking a stand against wife beating.

Pitching coach Rich Dubee added this, "Knowing Brett, the competitor he is.  I think we'll be able to find a couple of keys to keep him focused and he'll be fine."

Truly, I'd hate to see Brett lose his focus.  You know what a distraction guilt can be.  And while we're making sure that Brett is going to be ok, does anyone want to check in on Mrs. Myers to see how she's doing?

I'd be willing to guess that Mama Gump might have a thing or two to say to Gillick and Dubee as well, such as stupid is as...well, you know the rest.
