    Too Much Testosterone...Really?

Friday, July 28, 2006, 03:45 PM EST [Floyd Landis]

When someone mentions the name Floyd Landis, I'm not sure the phrase "too much testosterone" is the first thing that pops into my head.  Yet, that is precisely the reason the reigning Tour de France champ finds himself on the wrong side of a failed drug test.

Perhaps my perception of the issue isn't particularly accurate, but I tend to equate abnormally high levels of testosterone to fire-breathing, foaming-at-the-mouth linebacker types like, say, Bill Romanowski.

Now, that's a guy who if you told me had abnormally high amounts of testosterone in his system, I'd be inclined to think, "Yeah, that sounds about right."

Floyd Landis?  Not so much.  In fact, the resemblance between Landis and former Jeopardy ace Ken Jennings is, in my humble opinion, eerie.  And if you saw Ken Jennings on a bike, I doubt that you would be particularly inclined to think, "Now, that guy has way too much testosterone in his system!"

Of course, appearances can be deceiving.  In baseball these days, a lot of people claim to know whether or not a player is on something based on his hat size or some other physical criteria.  However, about half the players who have failed MLB's performance enhancing drug tests in recent years have been pitchers.  With normal hat sizes.

So, you really can't tell for sure what a particular athlete may or may not have taken just by looking at him.  But Floyd Landis and too much testosterone isn't a combination I would have paired very easily.  And for Landis' sake, I hope it is not a combination confirmed by a second failed drug test.
