    Rose Bowl redux

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:26 AM EST [General]

The Titans took an early lead on the Colts on Sunday thanks to a couple of rookies who shared the national championship stage a year ago.

First, USC's "other" back from last year, LenDale White, carried the ball twice in the scoring drive for 31 yards, showing the power that many felt would be his biggest asset as a pro. Then, to finish off the drive, Vince Young scampered 19 yards into the end zone, looking very much the way he did when he was leading Texas to the title against White's Trojans.

The Titans didn't throw the ball once during their scoring drive. With young legs like these to carry your team, why not use them?

The Titans entered the game averaging 70 rushing yards per game. Keeping the ball on the ground for almost the entire first quarter, they rushed for 100 yards in the game's first 15 minutes.

    Crazy start in Chicago

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:16 AM EST [General]

The Buffalo Bills faced their first big decision Sunday against the Bears on their opening drive of the game. Facing a fourth-and-1 on the Bears' 41, Bills coach Dick Jauron opted to go for it against the team he used to coach.

But ... the Bills jumped offsides and in came the punt team.

The fun didn't stop there, though, for Buffalo as the Bills went for the fake punt. The punter, however, fumbled the snap and the Bears took over with great field position.

    Quite a start, indeed.

    And there it is!

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:14 AM EST [General]

The "Player to get the first touchdown of NFL Week 5 award" goes to ... Torry Holt.

The Rams capitalized on a Vernand Morency fumble and converted that turnover into seven points.

Marc Bulger hit Holt for a 6-yard score and the Rams lead 7-0.

This is a terrible start for a Packers team still looking for its first win at home. Remember when opposing teams feared visits to Lambeau Field? Yeah, those days are long gone.

    NFL Week 5 under way

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:09 AM EST [General]

Contrary to popular belief, there's NFL play today that doesn't involve Terrell Owens and his return to Philadelphia.

Oh, and there's also more going on in the sports world than the reported firing of Yankees manager Joe Torre.

NFL Week 5 is under way and we're eagerly anticipating the first score of the day.

    NFL Week 5

Saturday, October 7, 2006, 12:54 PM EST [NFL]

It turns out that there's more going on in the NFL during Week 5 than T.O.'s much-ballyhooed return to Philly.

    Let's break it down ...

    - Can the Steelers finally get on track? It'll be tough, as the defending Super Bowl champs visit San Diego, which lost a heartbreaker to the Ravens last week. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is 0-2 as a starter this season, was 27-4 as a starting quarterback entering this season.

    - Dick Jauron, the former Bears head coach, returns to Chicago when he brings his Bills into Soldier Field to meet the undefeated Bears.

    - Bruce Gradkowski and Matt Leinart will both make their first NFL starts as the Buccaneers visit the Saints (on FOX) and the Cardinals host the Chiefs.

    - Vince Young makes his second career NFL start against the Colts, who have dominated the Titans-Colts series of late, winning the last six meetings in the series by an average score of 35-15.

    - The Redskins offense has come to life in recent weeks - racking up 495 yards and 31 points two weeks ago in Houston and 481 yards and 36 points last week against Jacksonville - and look to do much of the same against the Giants (on FOX), who have allowed the second-most points and fourth-most passing yards in the NFL.

    - Oh, yeah, then there's that game in Philadelphia (on FOX), where Terrell Owens should get a not-exactly-warm welcome from the Eagles faithful at Lincoln Financial Field.

Check back Sunday for regular game updates all day long.
