    Bears are impressive

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 12:10 PM EST [General]

If you're a Bills fan and you have something to do today, like yard work or driving your kids to the mall, feel free to do it.

You won't miss anything from today's game against Chicago.

The Bears have built a 20-0 second-quarter lead with their vaunted defense making plays, and their up-and-coming offense taking advantage of some terrific opportunities.

The Bills, meanwhile, need the offense from the 1991 season to step in and help them make up some ground, because the current unit isn't getting anything done. Willis McGahee can't find any holes to run through and J.P. Losman needs a step ladder to find his receivers.

    These Bears are impressive.

    Strahan gets his sack

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:57 AM EST [General]

Michael Strahan finally got a sack!

Strahan sacked Redskins QB Mark Brunell and then did a basketball jump shot to celebrate his first sack in seven games.

Strahan had gone six consecutive games without a sack, which was his longest since a seven-game streak in 1996.

Strahan is still just two sacks behind Lawrence Taylor (132.5) for the Giants' all-time record.

So far, Strahan and crew are keeping the Redskins' offense in check as the score remains tied at 3-3

The Redskins had scored 30-plus points and recorded 475-plus yards in consecutive games for the first time since 1981, which was Joe Gibbs' first season as Redskins head coach.

This is a big day in the NFC East. Later today, Terrell Owens and the Dallas Cowboys face the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field (on FOX).

You know, it's quite a day here at FOX. First, you have football, then you have more football (Cowboys-Eagles, Terrell Owens, Donovan McNabb, etc.), and, the topper, Game 4 of the NLDS between the Padres and Cardinals. Really, there's no reason to change the channel.

Oh, did we mention that Terrell Owens returns to Philly today? Sorry, had to go there.

    Defense rules in Carolina

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:41 AM EST [General]

The Panthers are on the board at home against the Browns, and they have their defense to thank for it.

Richard Marshall intercepted a Charlie Frye pass that was intended for Dennis Northcutt and raced 30 yards for the score, putting the Panthers ahead 7-3. The pass looked like it could have been caught by Northcutt, as it bounced off his hands and into Marshall's.

Steve Smith has dropped a few balls early in this game for Carolina.

Oh, and if you're curious, Patty and Selma of the Simpsons picked the Browns to win this game.

    Culpepper out, Harrington in

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:40 AM EST [General]

Miami QB Daunte Culpepper is doing clipboard duty today at New England, nursing a sore shoulder while Joey Harrington gets the start for the Dolphins.

It's a tough assignment for the man the Lions tossed into the scraphead. The Patriots have won 14 of their last 16 home games against division opponents.

The early review: Miami coaches are going with a short passing game to keep some of the pressure off of Harrington, who still seems prone to throwing off of his back foot.

    Football day in Green Bay

Sunday, October 8, 2006, 11:39 AM EST [General]

The Packers may no longer be among the NFL's elite and their home stadium isn't the feared venue it once was for visiting teams, but that doesn't mean the fun has been sucked out of Lambeau Field.

Noah Herron celebrates his first touchdown of the season by doing the Lambeau Leap, which delights the usual sellout green-and-gold clad crowd in Green Bay.

Herron is in for good at running back now for the Packers, who have placed starter Vernand Morency on the bench after two fumbles - one of which that resulted in a Rams touchdown.

The Packers are trying to bust out of a recent (and mildly confusing given their history of success at Lambeau) skid during which they have lost eight of their last 11 home games. The Packers are also trying to avoid starting 0-3 at home for the second time in the past three seasons.

The Rams, it turns out, haven't exactly been road warriors. St. Louis has lost 11 of its last 15 road games, including nine of 11 played outdoors.
