    Opposite directions

Sunday, December 10, 2006, 03:42 PM EST [General]

Hard to believe that the Chargers and Broncos were tied for the AFC West lead three weeks ago.

Both teams were 7-2 on Nov. 19 when San Diego rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat the Broncos in Denver. The Broncos haven't won a game since. The Chargers haven't lost.

It's looking like more of the same today in sunny SoCal. The Chargers are again shredding the once-vaunted Denver D and are leading 28-3 at halftime. LaDainian Tomlinson has scored his 27th TD of the season and Philip Rivers is 11 of 13 for 180 yards and two touchdown passes to Antonio Gates.

Jay Cutler, meanwhile, has thrown for just 36 yards and looks overwhelmed in his second NFL start.  The Broncos, once a Super Bowl hopeful, are falling out of the playoff picture.

    Nice suit

Mike Nolan's attire looks better than his team. After being embarrassed a week ago by the Jets, the Packers are returning the favor by dominating the 49ers.

The 49ers are 5-1 this season when allowing 20 points or fewer (0-6 when allowing more than 20).

    Gradkowski yanked

Sunday, December 10, 2006, 01:51 PM EST [General]

Maybe Bruce Gradkowski isn't the answer at quarterback for Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden.

Gradkowski was the man Gruden turned to when Chris Simms got hurt earlier this season, but he's also the guy Gruden just yanked from a game the Bucs were only trailing by a 17-6 count.

Tim Rattay is in the game for the Bucs, who are trying to rally against Atlanta. Simms has been cleared to return to team workouts, but the hope here is that the Bucs won't let him back in a game this season after a ruptured spleen sent him to a hospital for an emergency surgery a couple months ago.

So Rattay gets a chance to impress Gruden now, after Gradkowski apparently failed to do so.

    Ugly pick for Weinke

Sunday, December 10, 2006, 01:30 PM EST [General]

We guess we shouldn't really have been surprised that Chris Weinke might throw a really bad pick or two after being pressed into action Sunday.

But man, the one Gibril Wilson just pulled in was particularly ugly. There wasn't a Panthers receiver within five yards of Wilson when he hauled in the ball.

    Run, run, run

Are these the Colts, who are in contention for home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs?

Or, some imposter disguised as the Colts?

Today in Jacksonville, the Jaguars are running all over the Colts as they have amassed a 34-10 lead. Rookie of the year candidate Maurice Jones-Drew has 149 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns, while veteran Fred Taylor has 131 yards on nine carries and one touchdown. In all, the two have combined for a franchise record 280 yards rushing against a befuddled Colts defense.

It seems 300 rushing yards is easily within reach. Can the Jaguars get to 400?
