The Random Crap Rant, Hillenbrand's new home, Marshall Faulk's done, Golf, and More

Saturday, July 22, 2006, 10:19 AM EST [Shea Hillenbrand]

Time for another great version of the....

    THE RANDOM CRAP RANT

Whatever it takes to win is a phrase that is used a lot in sports.  Already with the surrounding Barry Bonds controversy, the San Francisco Giants decided lets bring in another controversial player.  Shea Hillenbrand, the Blue Jays first basemen who got tossed for apprently being a bad teammate, was signed by the Giants on Friday.  Sadly, the 30 year old Hillenbrand is one of the younger players on that old team, but he will help them a lot.  He will provide a solid bat which can bring in some more runs.  Maybe he'll be 5th in the lineup behind Bonds and Alou, but either way, Shea might be the piece needed to win that up for grabs division.

Marshall Faulk's career is about as over as can be.  This offseason, Faulk will undergo major knee surgery, likely putting him on the IR.  If Faulk returns the next year, he would be 34.  Marshall, why are you even considering NOT retiring?  The last couple years, you've been hurt quite a bit, and are no longer the best duel threat running back in the league.  The Rams drafted Steven Jackson to fill your shoes, and this season he will do it quite well.  Marshall, you had a great career in Indy and in St. Louis, but it's time to hang them up.  I'm sure one of the TV networks will give you an analyst job...

On to another constantly injured running back who none of us even know.  Correll Buckhalter was drafted in the 4th in 2001, and in his rookie year, showed promise to be a potenial solid running back.  Then the next year, Buckhalter went on the IR and missed the 2002 season.  Next year Buckhalter showed some potenial again, getting 8 touchdowns and looking to become a solid back for the Eagles.  Then in 2004, he missed the entire season again.  Looking to rebound from missing 2004, he followed it up by missing 2005 as well.  So the Mark Prior of the NFL is at it again, as he is now on the Physically Unable to Preform list.   Correll, why are you such a wuss?  It's a shame, this guy could have had a career, but injures ruined him.

This just in!  Tiger Woods is good.   But Tiger will have to hold off a bunch of other people, because as of right now, Sergio Garcia is tied for the lead with Tiger.  Angel Cabrera is one back at -11, along with Jim Furyk and Ernie Els.   I'm not a golf expert, but right now it looks like this tournament could have a very exciting finish, if Tiger doesn't pull a mile away.  But so far, 10 holes through, Tiger is even for the round.  Tiger will have to play at the top of his game to hold on against the guys behind him.

Finally, we'll end with A-Rod.  His terrible throw home hurt the Yankees against the Blue Jays, in a game which the Jays ended up winning.  Mike Mussina proceded to rip A-Rod.  You know what?  So his batting isn't nearly as good as A-Rod usually bats.  People forget that A-Rod at his worst is better than most guys at there best.  So what his fielding is bad?  Yelling at him and critizing him isn't going to give him any confidence.  If the city of New York wants A-Rod to step up, they need to give him some space, otherwise he will continue to slump, and the Yanks will likely fall short of the playoffs.  New York media and fans, GIVE A-ROD A BREAK.
