The Random Crap Rant, Horse Racing, Roger Clemens, NBA TV and more

Friday, May 5, 2006, 08:13 PM EST [Horse Racing]

Lets start another great Random Crap Rant!

The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is this Saturday.  Yeah, I didn't realize it either.  Is it maybe because NO ONE CARES about horse racing.  In reality, the only reason anyone watches it is if they have a bet down on some horse.  The Derby has a rich history, its been around forever and has even been dubbed "The most exciting 2 minutes in sports."  But is it really anymore?  Most people would easily watch anything over horse racing.  In fact, I doubt anyone on Earth that isn't a mad gambler or a jockey would claim that their favorite sport is horse racing.  The sport of kings, yawn.  No one cares anymore.  The excitement used to be from winning the Triple Crown, which is winning the Derby, along with Preakness and Belmont, but no one has done that since 1970.  Horse Racing is like Boxing, they are both dieing a slow painful death.  Hell, PETA is probably telling them that Horse Racing is cruel, they say everything else is.  So the final analysis on the Kentucky Derby, who cares?  I don't care if Woody Paige says its the 2nd best 2 minutes in sports (the 1st best, he claims is him having sex), the Kentucky Derby just doesn't matter anymore.  That is, unless you have $1000 bucks on a horse.

I really wish that these old athletes would make up their minds when it comes to retirement.  I got sick and tired of the Brett Favre deal, and I don't think I will have much patience when it comes to Roger Clemens.  Clemens, unlike Favre, is still crazy good, and would have won the Cy Young if he had run support last year.   I can't blame the Astros for wanting him, but I can't blame the Yanks or Sauks either.  The question is, Roger, do you want to play baseball?  If that answer is yes, then you should stay in Houston where your family lives, where everyone loves you, and where you have a damn good shot of winning it all at.   If he only desires money, then he will sign with the Yanks or Sauks.  Honestly, why go back to those two teams?  My take, either return to the Astros, or retire.  For Roger, it is if his heart is in it, because obviously after last year, he's proved he can still play.  I just hope this doesn't drag on for a month...

During the NBA playoffs I was fortunate to get to see my Chicago Bulls play their games. However, getting to see my Pacers was much tougher, because almost all of those games were on NBA TV. NBA TV is the NBA's little network, that you need to pay extra to get. I don't think that a network that exclusive should be the only channel showing a playoff game. I didn't have the chance to watch the Pacers play much at all, and all I saw of yesterdays game was the 10 seconds that TNT showed it.

Enter the NFL Network. NFL Network mainly features old NFL Films stuff along with Total Access, which is kinda like a NFL only sportscenter hosted by Rich Eisen. The NFL announced earlier this year that they will show regular season games live on NFL Network. I have this channel, as it comes with the regular package, but there should be exclusive games on here either. I wonder if these games will be a part of DirectTV's Sunday Ticket deal, or if it will be exclusive to NFL Network. That being said, NFL games should be at least part mainstream, and NBA PLAYOFF Games should not be that hard to find.

What ever happened to Tim Couch?   He wasn't a terrible QB.   His stats, while not great, weren't bad enough I think for him to be considered a bust.  But as I've said, QBs are only as good as the team around him.  Couch never had anyone good in his time with the Browns.   I ask, why hasn't anyone given him a chance lately?  I think he can still play, but does anyone else?  This may end up being a case where a QB disapeers for 5 years, then comes back as a old man and plays great.  (Rich Gannon)  I think Couch can play, but since no one else does, he should go to the CFL, Europe League or Arena League.  Prove that he can still go.

Which brings me to my final ranting for the day, do NBA referees know what "Traveling" and "Walking" are?  I swear, these refs never call these ever.  High School games get these calls, why can't the pros?  These guys are supposed to be better, meaning they shouldn't travel.  As far as complaints about foul calls, thats hit or miss, but for the sake of the game, start calling Traveling!

    THATS ALL I GOT
