It is about time that college basketball is in full swing. With the final undefeated team in Memphis losing on Saturday night, and now that we are only 2 weeks away from selection Sunday and I am really looking forward to the stretch run of games and the beginning of every conference tournament.
Now begins the race for the regional number one seeds. The college basketball universe has a wide open field for all of those seeds. With Memphis losing, everything for the number one overall seed just got interesting.
Now to assess the players vying for one of those coveted four seeds, and there are six teams in my opinion vying for that shot. But beyond that, the future looks bleak for a few teams and optimisim is shing for a few others.
Too many teams are using their outside game and not using penetration. Teams like North Carolina and Duke may be good enough to win the ACC, but the way they play defense is not a good thing. UNC play to outscore, they don't care how much you score, and they are going to beat you with scoring. Duke plays the same exact way. They are constantly shooting threes and have no inside game. Both teams play the same way as the Phoenix Suns, and how many playoff series have they won. Unless these two teams start playing a little defense and UNC gets Ty Lawson back, their title hopes just went up in smoke.
Memphis' downfall is one main thing, they can't shoot free throws. Going into the weekend, they had one of the worst free throw shooting percentages in all of college basketball. When they get ahead in games and teams start fouling Memphis, they had better improve their shots from the charity stripe if they want a hope at winning it all.
UCLA, Kansas and Tennessee probably have the best shot at the title because they play the type of game required to win in tournament play. They all play excellent basketball and are going to be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to their individual conference tournament.
These last couple of weeks before the Madness begins is going to be something to behold. Just sit back and enjoy.
