Opening Win for Chicago Following Long Delay

Monday, April 3, 2006, 05:10 AM EST [White Sox, Indians, Opening Da]

The defending champion White Sox started the season with a win over the Indians after waiting out a rain delay for nearly three hours.

The rain delay took Mark Buehrle out of the game after four innings, leaving Brandon McCarthy to pick up the win in relief. McCarthy pitched three hitless innings with two strikeouts to earn the win.

Cleveland reliever Fernando Cabrera pitched one disastrous inning after the rain subsided. He allowed six earned runs and a monster two-run homer to Jim Thome. Cabrera surrendered only two hits, but walked four White Sox hitters.

Time of game: 5 hours, 57 minutes

There's the opening bell. Action resumes on Monday afternoon.
