Week 6: Stars Young And Old, Old And New ... and Brady

Monday, October 15, 2007, 12:44 PM EST [Week 6, Tom Brady, LaDainian T]

    What a day!

Sure, the Week 6 showdown between Tom Brady and Tony Romo produced huge ratings, countless storylines and has been dissected a billion ways.

Aside from Brady's 48-27 win (how about that late rushing touchdown to put the proverbial explanation point on that one!), Sunday's NFL action gave us a great number of stories, from the resurgence of our star running backs (Tomlinson, Johnson and McGahee) to the emergence of a new superhero in the midwest. We also saw unheralded quarterbacks yield some of the week's top performances.

Peterson's production against the Bears was positively frightening, as he raced to three long touchdowns (35, 67 and 73 yards) and 224 yards to lead the Vikings to a road win over Chicago. He now leads the NFL with 607 rushing yards. How about that?

The bounce-back efforts for our projected stars couldn't come at a better time, as many owners needed somebody to step up given the huge number of injuries befalling skill position players and the fact that six teams were taking their Byes.

Who could have believed that a battle between Cleo Lemon and Derek Anderson would produce one of the week's most captivating fantasy contests? Or that Damon Huard would match Carson Palmer in the scoring column?

And then there's Vinny. I couldn't help but crack a smile as I did my in-game updates for FOX Sports Radio on Sunday, noting the strong return of Testaverde to the field against the Cardinals. He threw for 206 yards and involved Steve Smith early and often. Smith finished the game with 10 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown. Welcome back to both of them!

We also welcomed back Drew Brees to the land of positive points, although I'm sure more than a few owners sat him down this week.

It was a strange and exciting day. Sure, we saw more stars sidelined (Vince Young, Sammy Morris, Todd Heap and Kurt Warner) and others flop (Rivers, Alexander, Gates, Benson and an abysmal performance by Gus Frerotte), but we saw others rise to help owners in spot starts (Ben Obamanu, anyone?).

The middle weeks of the NFL season, Bye weeks and injuries, make for strange lineups and some of the greatest water cooler stories of the year.

Here's hoping that your longshots of the week came through in flying colors.
