If the 2007 football season has taught us anything, it's to expect the unexpected.
The NCAA season has been full of surprises at every turn. Upsets have occurred week after week. Nobody wants to be No. 2 in the polls, or stay there anyway. Beware of Dave Wannstedt and the Pitt Panthers, West Virginia. And then word came down that Heisman hopeful Tim Tebow broke his hand.
The NFL has been equally as unpredictable. In between the mountains of injuries and ample quarterback changes (Trent Edwards is back under center for the Bills, for what it's worth), we've watched our fantasy studs struggle and our favorite teams leave us scratching our heads. How are the Cardinals and Broncos fans out there feeling today? Forget them for a moment. How are Giants fans feeling this morning? Is the annual second-half fade on the horizon for the G-men with road trips to Chicago and Philadelphia on tap?
We saw two rookies shine in their first starting opportunities, as Kolby Smith and Andre Hall produced phenomenal efforts against the Raiders and Bears, respectively. Another rookie grabbed his share of the headlines on Sunday, and all he had to do was participate in pre-game warm-ups. Adrian Peterson is reportedly on track to play next weekend against the Lions, a remarkable recovery from an LCL injury that bolsters the playoff hopes of many fantasy owners.
Another running back whose return to the field has been well-documented is Miami running back Ricky Williams. He's set to take the field on Monday night against the Steelers. With Jesse Chatman limited by a knee injury, The Miami Herald reports that Williams stands to see a significant workload against the stout Pittsburgh run defense. It will most definitely be interesting to see Williams back on the field. He remained unclaimed in a large number of leagues, as many owners declared definitely - Show me something! That may change tonight.
A couple other running back situations to watch for the coming week are in Buffalo in Chicago. I noted the quarterback change above, but Dick Jauron remains concerned about Marshawn Lynch's health (high ankle sprain) and is hesitant to speak of his rookie back's availability for Week 13. Anthony Thomas played well in his absence with 91 total yards and a touchdown against the Jaguars. He did sustain a calf strain, so Dwayne Wright may be in line for more work in Week 13.
The Bears are also dealing with the fact that Cedric Benson may be lost for the season with an ankle injury. Adrian Peterson played well in his absence, rushing for a touchdown and demonstrating a great ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He'll be the lead back in Chicago if the initial reports are correct. We'll keep an eye on story as it develops. I'll be back on the waiver wire watch on Tuesday. Enjoy tonight's game. I'll have a full review of Ricky Williams' comeback in this spot tomorrow. Happy viewing.
