Spring Has Sprung: Watching Opening Day

Monday, April 2, 2007, 01:29 PM EST [Major League Baseball, Fantasy]

    2nd Hour:

Grady Sizemore jumped on a Jose Contreras fastball and promptly deposited it over the right-field wall to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead on Chicago. It was the beginning of a disastrous inning for the White Sox hurler. He would allow five first-inning runs before inducing a pop-up to end the onslaught.

A short break in the dugout would be no help to Contreras. He was battered around in the second inning and recorded zero outs before leaving. Contreras finished the day having allowed eight earned runs on eight hits.

Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano has pitched well against the Reds in the opener with the exception of Adam Dunn. Dunn has launched two home runs to account for all three Reds runs.

Ben Sheets of the Brewers is cruising through four innings. He's allowed one hit (a solo shot to Jeff Kent) and struck out three. Sheets is throwing nice and easy and is hitting his spots early.

The Marlins jumped all over John Patterson for six runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Hanley Ramirez has recorded a four-hit game with two stolen bases, while Dan Uggla and Miguel Cabrera homered. It won't always come this easy for Dontrelle Willis, but it's tough to overlook his six innings of two-run (one earned) pitching in the opener.

Devil Rays outfielder Elijah Dukes helped put an end to Carl Pavano's comeback start. Dukes hit his first career home run in the fifth inning. Pavano ended the day with five runs allowed (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Jeremy Bonderman struggled early, but finished his day with three earned runs allowed in six innings pitched. He battled Roy Halladay to a draw. And, it's vulture time in Detroit.
